This doesn’t incur a penalty? I got called on it in a match and it sounded feasible so I took the penalty 😯
No it dosnt.
If it’s nowhere near your ball and not on your line of play
If your just caring for the course you can rake prints before you take your shot.

To the slow group in front…Lads - we can see you’re enjoying your knock and so don’t need us pressing up behind you …so best we just play through don’t you think…as a quicker group we’ll be out of your way before you know it.

To the slow member of your own group… Jim - you best be careful as if you drop behind the rest of us any further the group behind will be asking you if they can play through…you’d then be on your own.

(Might actually try that with known slowbies at my place )

Was surprised to read this as I assumed it fell under "testing the ground" before a shot. Think I will start finding a minor uneven bit of sand and rake every bunker I am in before I play my shot to ascertain how deep and compacted, or otherwise, the sand is....thanks :)

Or… you could just be honest.

“look bob you’re slow, you got better before and you’re back to being slow. We’re going to play ready golf today with just so you can see how slow you play as a few groups that follow us have commented. We’re going to go first off the tee to give you time to compose yourself and get tees etc together, but you need to keep up with us. Off target shots we don’t expect you to help us look, instead go to your ball and play it. We’re not being funny, we’re trying to help you buddy “

He can either accept it and make an effort, or get his panties in a twist but either way you’ve tried.

At my old club it was simple - “ put xxxxxxxx out in the last group as that ****er is slow and we’ve got stuff todo “ but would be said with humour.

Then that’s on you as you are clearly do it in and order to gain an advantage, therefore you would be cheating….. if you did that 😉

It explicitly says your not allowed to test the sand!

Just like a lot of common sense things people will always want to abuse it 😳

For me it's not trying to "abuse it"....just trying to figure out what I'm getting myself into. For a lot of courses, you go in the sand and you have to decide if this is the sand trap that actually has deep sand or not. On the same course you might have a trap that has deep sand on one side and hardpack on the other side of the same bunker. I don't live in the pro world where everything is perfect. I live in the world of inconsistency from trap to trap.

We went off as a three at 09:30 yesterday, with a Friday morning roll up going off straight after us. Their first group kept fairly close for two hole and then slowly disappeared.

We finished at 13:00 and an hour later were supping our 3rd pint when it was pointed out that there were no signs yet of the first group. They appeared shortly after, and we proceeded to joked/comment on their slow play, with one of them smiling and commenting "yes, but I enjoyed it". Soon after a well-known 80+ year old member came in fuming, effing and blinding about how long the round had taken, he threw his money on the table and stormed out, upon which mayhem broke out as arguments ensured. It was most entertaining.

Slow play is boring, let’s move on to a rake debate.

I recently saw a freshly raked bunker with footprints leading from the rake. It took me a couple of seconds to realise that the golfer had played her shot, raked the bunker, carefully placed the rake in the centre of the bunker then walked out… but had no way to rake her footprints on the way out 🤣

It’s such a pain when the rake is left in the middle of the bunker because I then leave footprints retrieving it so extra raking. Also, those dastardly non-rakers leave more footprints in this scenario.
It’s really not difficult to gently throw a rake into a bunker so that it lands making minimal indentation in the sand. It stops where it lands and clearly no ball is going to be able to finish up in the indentation made by the rake - because the rake is sitting in its own indentation.

Anyway I digressed…this thread is about Slow Play - not rakes.
