Education indeed…though you can take a horse to water…but…you can but take it there.

Playing yesterday I spotted a junior playing the hole behind us careless leave a rake where he shouldn’t have and in a stupid place after playing out. As I was fairly close to them I simply said “lads…don’t forget - rakes go back into the middle of the bunker”….He most likely thought I was some fussy old git…which I am…but I said it in a friendly and hopefully non-too critical way - and maybe and with any luck he’ll remember next time…maybe.

If the kid was fussy he might have told you where the R&A and USGA recommend leaving bunker rakes.
Or suggested an alternative location it could be stuck.

Back on topic.....

Just tell him straight. Speed up or play with another group. Short and to the point. He'll either pick up the pace or he won't.

If he doesn't - follow through with your threat! Especially as it doesn't sound like he's your "bestie".

Why are some folks so unwilling to deal with matters head on?

I hate finding rakes in the middle of the bunker. I always leave them with the head in but the handle propped up on the edge to one side. I thought that was what you're supposed to do. If you leave them in the middle the ball is almost guaranteed to hit I'd have thought?

It’s up to the club ! They dictate where it goes.

Ours asks players to leave them in the middle of the bunker.
The logic being if your ball hits the rake your not unduly punished as it’s in the middle not stuck up the back or face!

Yeah I suppose. I can't remember if my club has made a specific request on this or not.

Ah - just found an email from a year ago - they have actually requested that people don't leave rakes in the bunker, but rest them on the edge like I said. Winning!

That’s a bit strange that two clubs would choose different ways to place rakes.
Would be nice to compare the logic. If there is any 😉

Each to their own I suppose 👍

If the rake is in the middle of the bunker and the bunker is quite large then the chances are that you'll have tk wal, further in the sand and therefore have tk rake more which takes more time.
If the rake handle is just on the edge you can pick it up and go the shortest route through the sand...
Ours are to be left in the bunker, the logic being you are already in a hazard rather than a rake half in half out and a ball may be deflected into the hazard.

Just thinking about rakes .

The way we do it ( rakes in middle) if your balls in the other side of the bunker you leave footprints going in to get the rake.

Play your shot you have two sets of footprints.
Unless you walk from the rake to your ball and leave a very long trail , it’s time consuming then to rake them all.

Raking the first set of prints before playing your shot will have some idiot calling a penalty on you
But you can rake it under care of the course.

Seems not very logical at all.
Where rakes outside seems more logical.😳

I'm not sure what our rule is but I always leave the rake with about 2 inches sitting on the edge with the tines furthest from the edge..you can pick it up with your club
Unlikely to stop a ball going in, unlikely to keep a ball out and the tines are far enough inside to give a decent stance should the ball get caught by them..

It doesn't matter where rakes are left here, for half the membership they are merely an ornament. However, I always leave them in the middle. For me, there is nothing more annoying than going into a bunker and finding your ball resting against it and up against the rear lip, the rake having stopped it reaching the middle.

As for slow play, two of our four are constantly alert of the situation regarding those behind us, two are not. It starts off with us playing faster to compensate for the other two and ends with me telling them exactly what the situation is and that if "we" don't get a move on we will have to step aside. It tends to get them moving.

I will worry about where rakes are once everyone starts using them

Or he could be following the recommendation by the USGA and R&A by placing the rake outside the bunker not impacting play

Is the correct way imo.

Slow play is boring, let’s move on to a rake debate.

I recently saw a freshly raked bunker with footprints leading from the rake. It took me a couple of seconds to realise that the golfer had played her shot, raked the bunker, carefully placed the rake in the centre of the bunker then walked out… but had no way to rake her footprints on the way out 🤣

It’s such a pain when the rake is left in the middle of the bunker because I then leave footprints retrieving it so extra raking. Also, those dastardly non-rakers leave more footprints in this scenario.

He might well - and he might cite every alternative others on the forum might suggest as more appropriate - but he wouldn’t be following club guidelines.
