Another slow play rant!

Putting my iron covers on For Sale Thread if anyone's interested, apparently they cause slow play

Sounds about right for a county comp - we played in the county Foursomes - the pair we were playing with were shockingly slow so I asked the county official marshal if he would mind requesting they picked up the pace as we had lost 3 holes - he said " we don't worry about pace of play " it was embarrassing- worse was the group behind lost two holes on us ! 5 hours for Foursomes

They should have made it a knock-out comp = 3:30 tops I hear :D

And here's me thinking of swapping out the slip on ones for those with the teeny tiny zips on them!
No!!! Don't be so selfish, you'll bring the course to a standstill

I played 1st round of the county seniors championship yesterday. The group in front of us were shocking, they had 4 or 5 clear cut opportunities to call us through. 5 hours to get round a 6000 yard course :o

Unbelievably, they then called us through half way down the 17th fairway!! I swear to God, if I'd had a gun in my bag I would up on 3 murder charges this morning. I handed my card in and told the organiser that I wouldn't be back today to go through that again

Your (quite reasonable) rage should not be solely against them - though letting you through 'halfway down 17' is completely ridiculous!

Your real gripe should be with the organiser(s), who should have had 'marshals' capable of directing obvious slow groups to let following group(s) through! Or to explain to groups forced to wait that there is nowhere for them to go! The latter is very often simply a case of too many golfers on the course (in the comp), so tee off intervals get reduced, which actually exacerbates the problem!

Btw. I don't normally have a problem with slow play, as long as it's 'tolerable'! This could well be because many of my best rounds have been in slow rounds - not necessarily simply behind slow groups! While i can understand the concept of 'wasting a day's leave to have this angst', I'd always prefer to be on a golf course than at work - and for 35+ years it actually cost me a day's pay to do so!

So sniff the flowers, watch the wildlife, talk to you FCs or do anything to avoid the red mist that is so destructive to a golf swing!

I'll do a couple of rounds with and without them and report back on my findings ;)

I am sure in themselves they are fine, if you like that sort of thing... my oppo seems to not be able to get them on and off without copious fannying about, drops one, lose it , has to go back or it, finds they are on the wrong numbered iron so checks them on floor while swapping about ... could be a YouTube sensation!

I just don't see a difference between these and putter covers or driver and fairway covers. ;)

I use a putter cover and I don't even know why - I just use it because it came with the putter and it even annoys me faffing about with it, but I figure it comes with one for a reason so I persevere with it. I even lost it once on the course and didn't bother going back to look for it, but the group behind us picked it up and brought it back to the clubhouse so I got it back.

But yeah, I could never be arsed with iron covers I shouldn't think. That would be way too much effort for me.

Putter covers are the satan of all club covers, everybody uses their putter more than any other club in the bag, 30-40 putts per round can add loads of time on, multiply that by a 4ball and it's not worth mentioning ;)

Yeah, I dislike it a lot and still use it. I think it's probably a fear that as soon as I stop using it, I'll drop an iron into the bag an accidentally knock a massive dent in the underside of the putter or something.

nothing wrong with a putter cover, cant go damaging that scotty..!

Hmmmm.......wish I had stolen the putter covers off the 3ball in front of me on the 1st tee yesterday

I had to calm myself down today.. little course near me just doing 18 took us as a 3 ball about 3 hours 30 but we were held up on every tee by the group in front who had no1 in front of them. Didn't call us through. Poor

Summed up their etiquette when I found a head cover and went over to them to say is this yours? No we saw that but wasn't ours.. how about you pick it up then and hand it in?!!!

Letting you through on the 17th is a well known ploy - You now walk off the 18th tee with everyone looking at you wondering why you lost so much ground and they look exasperated when they finally finish tight up behind you...

Sadly I've found it's all the county union events I've played and not just seniors - I no longer bother to enter any of them (which is a shame because on paper they should be a good day, well organised on well presented courses)

crafty.

for our big comps we are asked to put our start and finish times, so the main culprits can't hide;)

Ave said this before and I will continue to say it until proven otherwise. Don't blame them for being poor golfers blame them for being poor people. They are pig ignorant and blind to all they see and do. It would have stuck in there throat that they had to let you through.
I read on another thread that slow players should let people through so they can focus on there own round. I get that but after 17 holes I bet they were stacked back the the changing rooms never mind first tee. They might let them behind through but there are countless three and four balls behind them just as frustrated.
