2024 PGA Championship

Interesting to see that the reports that the charges against Scheffler were getting dropped were innacurate - and the case is still proceeding.

What are people's thoughts on this - there seems to be a lot of opinion that it's the wrong decision, but having said that, should Scottie be afforded the privilege of getting the charges dropped because of who he is, or is it correct to go through a proper investigation and trial?

As with anyone , he shouldn’t be above the law and any charges shouldn’t be removed just because of who he is

It should go through proper investigation to gain all the facts before decided the next step

Lock him up and throw away the key. Make an example of him.

As Rio Ferdinand would say, the golf he has played over the last year or two has been illegal. He ruined the Masters as a spectacle. He needs to be stopped, and an assault charge seems a great way to do it :)

Is this privilege actually being alleged by anyone?

None of us were there of course, but from the descriptions of what supposedly happened it sounded like a US cop being overzealous trying to make a name for himself. I mean, the '2nd degree assault' charge apparently refers to the fact that the cop put his hand on the car and Scottie didn't slam on the brakes immediately. He was told to drive where he was driving by one traffic cop only to be stopped by a different one. Sounded like a ridiculous situation. Would be incredibly out of character to imagine Scheffler charging around in his car trying to run over police officers.

My thoughts are if the police guy had his camera on we could see what all the fuss is about.

Ive seen plenty of people alluding that they should drop charges based on who’s involved.

If its just opinion or wish from fans to drop/not drop, Does it really warrant much of a discussion (its likely to be very one-sided unless they fancy coming onto the forum and backing up their opinion that the world No1 should stand above the law due to his position in golf)

Are they "significant" enough to warrant any charges being dropped?

Nope, but they are significant enough to discuss their opinion charges should be dropped (which is what Mel was asking)

"there seems to be a lot of opinion that it's the wrong decision, but having said that, should Scottie be afforded the privilege of getting the charges dropped because of who he is, or is it correct to go through a proper investigation and trial?"

(if it were true)

Social media of course. Why ask the question.
Because, if I was to bring up the conversation on a forum based on what others have said publicly, I'd only do so if I thought the opinions where of high enough standing to discuss. Whereas, if I saw silly comments from nameless social media accounts, then I wouldn't see that as anything worth discussion.

As Slab said, if a high profile person had suggested such a thing publicly, then it would be worth talking about, even if it is to ridicule that high profile person's opinion. But, if it is someone like "golffan123" making the comment, who cares? Discuss it with them directly if you wish, but using their opinion as an indication that it could be a more widespread opinion is a stretch

Agreed but ultimately it will surely come down to a judge to make that decision and any form of speculation won't change that decision based on the evidence they have at hand. Surely it has to go through due process
