If the course doesn't form part of the 18 hole layout and the holes contained within don't for part of the internal boundaries of the course it is perfectly permissable to play.

Basically if it is some sort oof academy course then there will be no problem. It also sounds like a bit of a jolly (bit like a glorified texas scramble).

I think shanker is being a bit over zealous with the rules are rules line. Yes in the greater scheme of things he is right but this wasn't for the club championship. Even if Barb did play on the course it sounds like an oversight of the rules. If she has broekn the rule it will a lesson learnt and unlikely to be repeated. As it happens I got caught out by the exact same rule as a junior. Came second in one of the club's more prestigious events but I had played 1,2, 3 and 18 in innocence and got D/Q'd. Never done it since.

Hands up anyone who has NEVER broken a rule of golf by not knowing. Thought not.

I say let Barb have her moment in the sun She can bask on that solid opening drive, a round of neandit proportions and a place in the winners enclosure.

You went out and played a couple of holes earlier!!!
You were 4 under your handicap and won???
Hand the prize back and learn the rules of golf, Barbie.

Hi Guys,
Just thought I'd update you all on the facts of yesterday.

1. it was not an offical club competition, it was a ladies open day (i.e ladies get together not a ladies open) and the pro came along to make up numbers.

2. I didn't practice on the course we played as we have a small 9 hole course that is used for practice purposes only by members.

3. I was not the only one who practiced earlier.

4. I won a bottle of wine.

So thanks to those of you quick to condemn but more so thanks to those who offered support. Next time I'll keep it to myself.

Oh and shanker I don't like being called barbie
Thanks guys

Sorry about the ''Barbie''. A genuine mistake. I still think if there are prizes to be won (even bottles of wine) we should stick the rules.

Come on shanker lighten up. Its good to see your point on rules and i am right with you, however this was clearly just a knock about and nothing too serious. Its just like arranging an afternoon with all the lads and playing for 20 quid. Are you really gonna D'Q anyone for turning up in the morning for 9?

Well done Barb!

Glad you nailed the drive and won. Have your moment, and hold on to it, hey even recall it come your proper events!

At the end of the day ut was only a bit of fun and for the sake of a bottle of plonk I'd forget all about it. I think shanker needs a chill pill. Agreed rules is rules and all that but I'm sure in his normal greedies and swindles at the weekend not everyone plays to the rules 100% of the time albeit through ignorance.

I'd get the wine inside you (it will make it all seem better anyway). Lie back and remember all those good shots you played. You weren't alone in breaking the rules and so unless you are going to D/q everyone just let it go

Barb.

Well done. I'm proud of you. It must have been a very nerve wracking moment standing on that 1st tee with all those people watching. Hopefully it will get easier for you the more you do it.

I have to say that I am quite appalled at the way some of the forum barrack layers have jumped on the bandwagon 'cos someone thought you had broken a rule. Shame on them. Let me make this absolutely clear. You did nothing wrong, as you know. Even if it had been an official club competition (which it wasn't) you did not "practice" on the course you were to play but played on another course entirely. I'm surprised that one of our more learned forumers hadn't suggested that you shouldn't go to the practice ground adjacent to the competition course because it has bunkers and flags on it. How about a putting green??

Come on guys. Learn the rules before commenting on others. If you haven't got a rule book I assume that you don't buy GM each month in which case - go and buy one, read and inwardly digest.

Rant over, until someone tells me I'm wrong.

Barb; I'm with Leftie & Homer. Well done & hope you have more to come. Was surprised at the speed of "condemn-ment" - ok, shanker seemed to have missed your original post so possibly didn't realise about the "other" course, but the others...

Shame on you everyone who assumed Barb broke the rules rather than assumed she abided by them.

I have to give Shanker some support here someone some day will be saying a silent thank you to him for pointing this out and saving them embarrassment of disqualification.

Too late for me - it happened as a junior. I think we all took on board what he was saying and at the end of the day he was 100% right and so the morale high ground was well and truley his.

What I think people were upset about was his intensity in what at the end of the day was a very small scale friendly game and not even an official club event

As my final comment I'd just like to point out that in the post which started this discussion there was no mention of the fact that the poster played ''a couple of holes'' on another nine which they have. It was logical to assume that she had played them on the course to be used for the comp.
I still have doubts as to whether this would be permitted in a more serious tournament. If a golf club has 27 holes then conditions on all of them might be similar and you could gain an advantage by practising on the ''other nine''.
With all due respect, I have little or no interest in competitive golf involving 30 handicappers chasing a bottle of wine.
I don't, however, like to see the rules disregarded. Neither do many of the other GM posters judging from how often this gets dicussed here.

Well am sorry mate but it seems to me that you do, If you dont, then why post?

This is not a dig nor is it meant in anyway other than light hearted but if you aint that interested in it, just leave it out and move on to the next post.

As i have already said, i respect what your saying 'morally'
but really, let it go, it was just a friendly knock about.

Hope i havn't offended you by posting this but if i have, i'm sorry.

Your comments are noted Tony and I certainly haven't taken offence. However, I stand by what I said. The ladies can do as they please in their comps. but the rules are above that. I can give you examples of top-class professional golfers being penalised for inadvertently breaking the rules. Why shouldn't a high-handicapper take advice regarding the rules of the game?
