Re: Iona

She comes across as a genuine person, and in looks, manner and behaviour, extremely ‘lovely’

But her accent or her voice grates on me in the extreme …. and I lived for 3 years in Scotland, had Scottish Grandparents, a couple of ex-GFs were Scottish and my brother-in-law and a number of male and female friends are Scottish (ranging from Glasgow, West of Scotland, Edinburgh, the Borders, and north of Ullapool) so have met lots of different Scottish accents, but I can’t place hers

Obvs I know there are many types of Scottish accent, and within those, voices are highly personal….So 1) where is her accent from? 2) Is it her voice or her accent I find grates?

In principle, there are many Scottish accents on women I find extremely appealing. The nicest accent on a woman, I think worldwide

But hers is v tough on my ears..

Well, she's from St Andrews, and I personally can't image being annoyed by her accent or voice. But horses for courses I guess. Remember that Colin Montgomerie is Scottish and yet his accent is nowhere near Sam Torrance. So there's allsorts apparently

I think he spent most of his youth in Yorkshire, Ilkley, so that would explain his accent. (apologies for the pedantry  )

A bit like that Wings Over Scotland Nat. bloke…chosen to spend the overwhelming majority of his adult life in England. Yet ‘Professional’ nationalist 🙄

Just watched this.

I'm not a big fan of his, but he seemed fine with me on that video- early on he said he was going to show her how to play competitive matchplay by getting into the heads of his opponents, which is why he may have seen a bit smug/patronising maybe?

Iona tried a bit of it back at him too after his advice, but wasn't as successful as he just shrugged it off.

She seemed to appreciate what he told her, enjoyed the 9 holes, and he showed her that he can still play golf.

The Ryder Cup chats were pretty interesting.
This is how I found it. I am ambivalent about McGinley, though if I was pressed I might be 52/48 irritated by some of his commentary. But in the main I’m neither here nor there.

In this to me he came across as genuinely trying to make Iona feel comfortable so she could play her best - whilst trying to help her in her decision making. To be honest I think this is one of these situations (and there are many these days) where if you want to believe something, you’ll see and hear what you want to see and hear to justify your belief in what you want to believe…regardless of the actual evidence in front of you.

She's very well connected. Top private school in Edinburgh, St Andrews uni and then a scholarship at Wentworth.

Where are all the Bethpage vlogs! In the run up to Rome I’m sure all the main YouTubers had put out videos by now. Only seen the one by Iona so far and that was a hard watch (audio problems).

The amount of people getting triggered by the McGinley and Iona video is hilarious. I thought it was a great bit of content. McGinley isn’t patronising or condescending, he’s just explaining the dynamics of match play to Iona and how to get a competitive edge during the match and each shot. You can see Iona trying to take it all on board which is why she try’s some of it back, albeit unsuccessfully. If you put any personal bias to the side there was some great insights in there and what to do in different situations. I thought it was a great video personally but then again I’m maybe one of the few who doesn’t mind McGinley in the first place. At the very least he showed he’s still got a serious game in there and knows how to play golf.
Just watched this last night. I get what McGinley was trying to do, I just wasn't sure it was warranted and came across as a man taking a friendly match far too seriously. A few times when Iona was trying to say something light-hearted, he would just cut her off with something about how the pressure was on her because she needed to hole out for a half or whatever. Like, it didn't seem like they set out to make a video about the ins and outs of matchplay, he just turned it into that himself. I thought it was meant to be a friendly game to show off the 2027 Ryder Cup course.

I didn't hate it though, he was definitely more bearable than he is on the Sky coverage, as he was a little more relaxed in himself. And didn't mention Rory as much as normal. 😂

Really enjoyed watching that. I’m a huge fan of some of the newer budget brands and what their offerings are compared to the large OEMs.

That Takomo driver numbers look good so on their irons. Certainly something I’d consider playing as I’m really not a brand whore. My current set up couldn’t be further from any other Low handicap player I know and often get looks when people see what I’m playing and how it performs compared to their high end budget gear.

I’m curious now what’s in your bag 🧐

Driver: Kirkland - Stiff Shaft, set to 9° with slight open face.

5 Wood: Rife RX7 - Stiff Shaft 18°

Irons 4-PW - Kirkland Signature, True Temper Elevate 115 Stiff steel shaft

Wedges - Kirkland Signature, Temper Elevate 115 Stiff steel shaft , 52°, 56° & 58°

Putter - Rife Black RG7

I was terrible for branded clubs when I played before but made a concerted effort when returning to playing this year to play to my best on a budget and enjoy the game more rather than focusing on needing the latest high end overpriced kit.

What I’ve got in the bag now feels, good, performs well and I’m scoring mid to low 70s just as I was before. Handicaps sitting at 4.0 after 6 years out I’ll take that and it’s coming down getting slowly closer to where I was with more expensive gear.

Could I eek out a few more yards with a more expensive driver? Maybe but my average is around 260-270 with what I’ve got so I’m happy. The only thing I am considering adding early next year is a PXG mini driver but purely because it offers something different from the tee in comps and with their Hero’s discount I can get over £130 off a new one. 👌

Few lads I play with always comment they can’t understand how I can score with what I have as they’re brand snobs, but when they have a hit of my clubs they’re usually pleasantly surprised.

Would certainly look at brands like Takomo when the time comes to eventually change.

I have the Kirkland wedges & imo they’re as good as any of the top brands.
I’ll definitely look at the Takomo irons when I’m after new irons.

They’re genuinely excellent clubs. As good as any Cleveland or TM wedges I’ve had over the years. Well weighted, great feel off the face and generate plenty of spin.

I feel the same about the rest in my bag to be fair. Takomo, Kirkland and similar are in an excellent space in the game they’re turning out high quality, well perform gear with top quality heads, shafts and grips for a much more affordable price which in the modern climate will get a lot of people playing or staying in the game.

I think the only downside to these clubs is the level of customer service be fine if everything’s ok but from reading up on them it’s a bit of a chore to get sorted if any issues
