YouTubers.

I use YouTube and subscriptions to basically make a on demand video library of channels that appeal to me.
Instead of watching love Island or whatever I will open youtube on the TV and I will be presented with videos that I'm likely to want to watch.
I obviously won't watch them all but it highlights newly posted videos by people that I subscribe to.
Subscribing to certain channels, the algorithm will learn what you like and suggest other channels similar so you can find other channels you might like.

I could really be doing with a cull of some channels that I don't really watch anymore.

I mostly watch YouTube on my phone. The app does this for me without me having a YouTube account, or subscribing to anything. Just open the app and things are there that I have an interest in based on previous watches.

Unsure why all the hate for Shiels amongst golfers?

I'm happy for anyone to excel in the sport, be that playing, or any other 'branch' involved, be that as a pro, greenkeeper, retailer, whatever.

He's built the biggest YouTube channel in 12 or so years, even before YouTube was even a thing, at a rate which overshadows most of the others.

He will have budgeted for some immediate subscriber loss because he's a business man and a business man who's made a fantastic decision to grow and a massively different pace than he can from this point in time as 'just a YouTuber'.

Go on lad, smash it and sell out for millions 👏
Some of it comes from a sense that the quality has declined, or at best plateaued over the last few years when competion is both more numerous and some have upped that bar. Some from a view that he has gotten a little carried away with his success or big for his boots, especially combined with the first element. A few well documented phoning-it-in or stroppy going through the motions vids reinforced those views.
'Biggest' you tube channel is questionable too, although he does hit hig numbers others would be envious of. He has been around a long time, so has accumulated a lot of subscribers. But that not a great indicator of actual active followers, and conversion of subscribers into actual views isnt quite what the subsription number or profile might lead one to believe. The numbers viewing some of his content is baffling if viewed just on the content, but of course, the profile is always going to generate traffic. He is undoubtedly big, and as mentioned did catch a wave during covid that was merited. But was a bit of a wave, rather than any true long term specialness or attribute to keep him as the top dog of youtube golf. LIV was a no-brainer for him. There was probably only down ahead on his own channel as it was. So cashing in a the peak is what the smart do. With little interest in LIV, whether he brings any following to what he generates with them will be interesting. LIV is a failed venture but anything can be propped up with enough money, so Shiels youtube will surely be a 'success' in the official line from both he and them, with views manufactured to ensure it is if needs.

I'm also using a 3rd party app on the TV called smart tube. Gets rid of the ads.
You can get it on your phone too if you have android.

Majors aside, this is by far more entertaining than PGA, DP, LiV, TGL, “The Match” etc etc … at least to me and I can skip any bits I don’t like (ahem, gummies 😂).

He’s got his podcast out talking about the decision to be sponsored by LIV. Made me want to vomit.

Comes entirely across as largely disingenuous to me. The politicians response. “I’m still going to be the same Rick”. Pass me the vomit bag please. Ever since he went to the YouTube creators gathering he’s been like a different person. Selling his own merch (honestly who buys stuff with a Rick Shiels logo on it!). Making cringey teaser videos like he’s a celebrity. It’s all gone to his head. He calls viewers “fans” now. Did he always do that? Climb off your own ego Rick! I liked him much more when he was just a down to earth genuine YouTube golfer. His stuff was always inoffensive and entertaining.

When I saw the initial announcement, I was fairly "meh" about it all. But I have listened to the podcast and my god, it's awful.

The podcast could have been 2 minutes. "We got a load of money and some good opportunities to film with some good golfers and courses etc". But it was just terrible. Which is exactly what the Saudis are paying for I guess. This is sportswashing 101.

For the last three years or so, yes, he’s been like that

Obviously playing a ‘character’, if you look at how he talks, and how over the top he is and his body language, compared to 2020 or earlier…

Let’s be real, this ‘new’ persona, is nothing to do with LIV — the approx post 2021 or so hamming it up, and talking to the viewers like they’re missing a few IQ perhaps is when he realised his core audience was Americans

I rarely watch YouTube golf unless there’s a course I like and have played, or want to play OR/AND it’s got someone I like featured

I will watch this when I get time as I like DJ

It’s very cheesy, but I think they know that….in a way I kinda like it.

I think people like GH are making great strides in this space, for me I like to watch good golf. This is where RS is getting left behind a bit, and shows why his videos with James Robinson do well…..he’s likeable and a quality player.

Not golf related but I’ve been watching a channel called The Outdoor Boys recently, it’s mainly a fella going out to the middle of Alaska making shelters in the snow and cooking on open fires, it is good honestly 🤣
I watch a guy called Peter Santanello who goes around areas of America I've never heard of and speaks to the locals. Really interesting. Honestly

I really, really rate Dan Grieve the brilliant short game guru. He has some really good videos on YouTube for the short game, his three releases and bunker work is outstanding. He really emphasises using your golf IQ and setup. He has a good book out but his videos are excellent.
I'm amazed at how his methods have improved my short game which was OK but now is so good. The big thing I've taken from it is that the long and short games are almost complete opposites in execution.

The fact he’s signed with LIV and made these big changes and has all this big plans, isn’t an issue for me, good luck to him, fair play. I’ll probably watch some of them as well, as I do now.

My issue is with the big build up to it, going dark, teaser videos, logo blacked out etc. Just felt a bit ‘ooh, look at me, everyone will be as excited as I am about my career’. Well no, we don’t really care. Maybe it’s because I’m the sort of person who doesn’t celebrate their own success or even really like public praise, it just felt very big headed to me.
Nail on head hit!👍

I got the book last week having enjoyed some of his videos. Looking forward to getting some practice in with it!
