Why the Europa league is so wrong...

I'm a man Utd fan and it's only been 5 minutes into our Europa league campaign and I already hate it... Firstly it's on a Thursday, so it affects our premier league games, secondly it's on channel 5, they are not a football channel they never have been and never should be and finally the commentary, I think I would rather just watch the game with no sound, it's truly awful, everything about it drives me crazy. Frankly I would rather we weren't in it at all...

Nothing wrong with it! Replaced the old uefa cup and teams where proud to win that. I think it's a media and fans that put it down as its not as lucrative as the champs league. Same with the league cup teams used to love it then it got shunned a bit. I remember when untd shunned the FA cup one year as well

Agreed and it lost status when those who failed in the Champions League got another pop at a trophy. Like making the Plate Final in rugby etc etc. Teams should qualify by league position and that's it.

I really wish they'd not introduced Group stages to the Uefa Cup.

Makes it a bit less exciting in my opinion. Even although it did mean the mighty dons staying in Europe longer a few years back it was, in my opinion, a far better competition when it was straight knock out.

And the CL teams shouldn't drop into it either.

Bring back the Cup Winners Cup. No stigma attached to it because places were not won by finishing half way up the league and attracted a different type of club who peformed well in the cups but may not have been able to make a league challenge. Simple home and away knockout would be the way forward.

The Europa League was shot as soon as they agreed to allow CL rejects in. At that stage it did become a plate competition for those who did not make the grade in the Champions League.

I am a Man Utd fan and quite enjoyed actually,Wasnt looking forward to it at first,but Thursday nite,channel 5,we won and last day in work tomorrow,before golf on Sat & Sun,,,,agree with the commentary though,poor to say the least.

I am a united fan and I dont think this competition is to be sniffed at this year, we have never won this trophy, and the way we performed in the champions league I think this is a good chance to give some players more European action, the atmosphere there tonight before the game sounded immense and it thing like that will help the likes of Smalling, Jones, Fabio, Cleverly, Hernandez, Welbeck just have that bit more experience if next year we go the the San Siro in the knock out stages for example.

To be honest being on channel 5 makes no difference what so ever its just showing you the picture that you would get on any other "football" channel. If you dont like the commentary go find 5live on the radio or something. As to it mucking up our premier league fixtures its no different to the champions league we would still only have 2-3 days between games.

Although saying all that I still dont like the fact Champions league teams who get knocked out go in this. It should be the teams from the off all in a pot maybe shorted the field a bit and have it as a knock out tournament. Its the same with the FA cup, have your qualifiers for your non league teams then round 1 everyone is in.

Man utd only shunned the FA cup to go play in the world club championships. FA caused themselves the problem there as they wouldnt let united play a week later so they could play in all the competitions. They had to choose one and were damned if they do damned if they didnt.

I'm a Fulham fan and so I've some good memories of the Europa League. Had we not conceded with 7 seconds left in the last group game we'd still be in it. I think it gets devalued when the CL teams come in. You've worked hard to get through your group and lets be fair there were some decent sides in the first phase and then you get whammie with a powerhouse from another league (Porto, Man U etc). Hardly seems worthwhile

Le grand tosseur Platini and co ruined what was a unique (two-legged final, each at home grounds) and worthwhile competition.

Being a Hibby, and therefore very rarely getting any European football, I think any Euro tourney is terrific.People from bigger teams take it for granted.

Personally I hanker back to the good old days when it was the European Cup and for league winners only. Random draw in each round and home and away with away goals counting double. OK so you could have Man U v Barcelona in the 1st round but so what. These days its all about getting as much cash from TV as you can. The Europa league is no different. Felt sorry for the like of Wimbledon who were only ever going to get one shot at Europe and couldn't play. I thought the CWC was another great comp.

Totally agree.

The Champions League should be an elite tournament for the teams that have WON there respective title's. Years ago teams never devalued the UEFA cup, but now it's like the Carling Cup!!

I do thin kwe don't deserve to be in it, our champions league performances were pitiful so to still be in a form of European competition is not right, I mean its the last 32? Thats the organisers just exploiting how much money they can get from the competition, I don't mind the champions league as once you get to the knockouts its mostly the cream of the crop in europe, at least we have a chance of winning it though...

One bright side - You could be one of the few top clubs who can still win the top 3 euro trophies (CWC/Champs lge/UEFA). LFC can't as we never won the CWC. I think only Juventus and Ajax have won all 3, but may be wrong.

One solace I took last year as an LFC fan was if we won the UEFA cup, we would have won it the most outright, we are jointly on 3 with Internazionale.
