Why is Golf so under-credited?

Rory would because of his Nike deal, I highly doubt Rickie would have enough already to last a lifetime? All I'm saying is Golfers have more passion for their sport than Footballers do. The only teams that win things now are ones that have been invested in by some multi billionaire who can buy any player in the world, where all the players barely even work well together! Aka Man City. Think 10 years back and how **** they used to be! Money is Football now

Plenty of passion in football mate.

If we are being very honest here - both golfers and footballers receive a ridiculous amount of money for what they do.
Whether it is deserved or earned is debatable.
In the majority, both golfers and footballers would do it regardless of the rewards.
Agreed

Hmm maybe I just don't see it anymore mate. But I guess I can be a bit bitter towards Football, being a Leeds fan 'n' all haha.

Step inside the dressing room at Elland Road just after you've been beaten and see how much passion these over paid premadonnas have. You will be extremely surprised ;)

Haha I'm not saying every club isn't passionate, Leeds certainly are. Good to see Ross McCormack sign a new 4 year deal yesterday because he wants to be at Leeds, very refreshing to see. Just seem to think the Premiership clubs don't have as much anymore, some of them have a new squad every year with a different manager too. Championship is a scrappy league and I do enjoy watching the lower league teams play.

Disagree with that, he had offers to go elsewhere but stuck at Leeds because he wants to see us return to the top (eventually)! If he was in it entirely for the money he certainly wouldn't have signed for 4 years.

He's signed for 4 years so Leeds can get a transfer fee rather than him walk away.

What were you saying about money......? :)

I love this club..............now, talk to me about this improved and extended new contract.;)

Would he have signed a new deal if a prem club ad come calling?? I think not

If you earned the average UK wage for 44 years (21-65) that would give you just under £1.5 million for your working lifetime!

Take the performance of Padraig Harrington as an example of someone not playing well but in the top flight of golf.

He has won just under half a million this year playing alone.

Rickie has won just over 1 million. That excludes sponsorship deals, adverts etc.

Even if 60% of the winnings wasn't going into their pockets that is some haul to be effectively working at your hobby.

Puts it all into perspective really. Top end sports stars are on a different planet compared to the average Joe :mmm:

Thats why Cardiff pumped Man City last week!

Golf is one of the biggest global sports, played in pretty much every country by pretty much everyone with cash, for cash.

I think golf is actually closer to overrated than underrated.

The sad reality.:(

So you want it to get more column inches? Just read a golf mag. 90% of stuff writ in newspapers is tripe anyway.

Yeah I didn't say it's not popular, I just think it needs more credit in the news etc.

Football sells papers. Golf doesn't. If you look at their ABC's you'll see a dip in the summer during the off season. There are one-off peaks like the September 11th attacks, Micheal Jackson dying etc but in the main football drives the papers.

. Makes me laugh when people make out that golfers are hard working squeaky clean professionals as oppose to footballers.

sorry your wrong. golfers are very hard working professionals. look at tiger..... your telling me three girl friends is easy work!

Of course you can argue that any player at the top of their game is made for life. I doubt Phil Taylor will want for much for throwing a lump of metal. Most of the England cricketers are on good salaries on a central contract with bonuses and endorsements and even top jockey's like AP McCoy are sorted. Different sports but the cash is there if you are good enough.

However surely the point has to be, for every top player, there are those who are perhaps as talented but never get the breaks, are unlucky with injuries or perhaps don't have the mental strength to go with their talent. Bringing it back to golf, look how many golfers around the country are good enough to be PGA pros and how many of them are good enough to make a living solely playing on local tours? Not many which is why most are I the shop working long hours and putting up with members gripes and moans. If you risk it all and want to go onto the Europro tour etc, then the cash is still relatively small and never enough to live on fully.

Golf will always be under credited especially in the media. It does attract some good sponsorship, even at local pro-am level so these companies must see something in it to put their money into an event in these austere times. It isn't just about the big names although of course they are what the meagre column inches afforded to golf focus on
