Why do some folk still hate Nike?

Weather you like Nike or loath them, they do make some good clubs, the only thing is,when you find one that you like, theres always a better brand out there thats prooved over the years,Titleist,Ping,Mizuno, all come to mind
I wouldnt look any further than MIZUNO'S if I was looking for a set of irons, but I do like TM's woods and rescue's with the go-faster stripes.

I'm not a hater. Don't like the label. I think when they first came on the scene their intial offerings were divisive. The drivers were louder than a loud thing making noise on national loud day. You couldn't practice in the net bay without your ears bleeding. Since then I thinkt ehy have progressed. The VR Pro Combo irons were a great range and the Covert driver looks good although I've not hit it yet.

Would I buy Nike? The crux comes down to being offered them in a fitting alongside the other big players. I don't know they are quite widespread enough yet and so unless you have somewhere to try them they aren't mainstream enough. If I hit them and the numbers and performance was the best I don't care if they are made by Nike or the man on the moon. I want the best clubs for my game

Good post Homer, cheers.Fair point about custom fit,I have not seen many places offering Nike as an option, and it seems a bit harder to order them with non stock shafts. They should sort this out!

My VR Pro ltd edition fairway woods are epically good. I only paid £79 a pop brand new too. They are supposed to be for the better player and have a lovely classic look but I have no issue hitting them from tee or fairway, easier than my old g20 4wood believe it or not. I absolutely love them.
Very tempted by the matching driver from clubhouse golf for £129, but resisting so far as I have a g20 and 910d2 already.

My method core putter is great too, and I have a smart nike carry bag.

My irons will always be mizuno though.

surprised no one has yet mentioned they dislike Nike clubs because Tiger plays them.......I know there's loads of people in that boat....

Personally I think they make great clubs, I shot my 1st scratch round with a set if Nike VR's. I have owned 3 sets of Nike irons.....the VR11 pro blades were a thing of beauty ...... I've had 3 Nike drivers and different fairway/hybrids..all long and straight.......if I didn't have a serious club changing problem, I would probably still have them.........

.......greatly underrated in my opinion and therefore a big thumbs up...

I just got a VR Pro STR8 Fit 5 wood,I can't wait to give it a bash! Cheers Stuey.;)

Thanks for your post Rick, glad to see some fans!

I'm looking at a new driver in a few months time and the Nike Covert is favourite at the moment.

It had excellent reviews on YouTube and the Celtic Manor which is close to me is in the process of fitting out their Nike custom fitting bay.

Let us know how you get on mate, sounds like a good day out!

Was going to ask why no Nike clubs in your sig! Now the question is - did you buy this before or after you started the thread?
:) :fore:

A few days before mate,I recently got a Vr Pro STR8 Fit 10.5 driver too,and I am really liking it so far after a quick range session.I still need to take it to the course so we will see if it can shift the 910D2.I will probably drop a hybrid if the 5 wood goes ok too, fingers crossed! ;)

Dont really like Nike clubs never have done, however the Covert Driver looks great and the last set of Bladed irons they released were super as well. Dont have many places near to me that stock it either. Their Golf clothing has improved big time in recent years got quite a bit of that.

Although I love them Deke there will come a time soon when I need to change them and when that time comes I want a proper custom fit. I don't think I'll be able to get a proper Nike custom fit so I fear I may have to look elsewhere.

I have recently decided to sack the Nike Driver for the Mizuno one that I have as I have now worked out how to hit the thing and can't see past it. I love my clubs but if something better comes my way then I'm not ashamed to try it.

In the meantime I will love them till they get me to single figures :-)

I hear you buddy, good luck with your mission to single figures,I am sure the Nike bats are up to it! :)

I don't hate Nike, but I don't like their clubs a lot. I have tried various Nike clubs over the years and not found one that I stayed with. The same is also true of other brands too, though.

I think one of the reasons some people dislike Nike is that the image is rather brash and in your face. This is obviously designed to appeal to certain types of punter, but will inevitably turn others off. The same is true of brands which have a very sober image, some like them, some don't.

Nike also has a heavy management presence on the golfers whole brand. That is why you see goons with Nike jackets protecting Tiger and why they had a large role in crafting his disastrous response to the famous 'wife chasing him with 9 iron' and all that ensued. If Nike had not crafted such a cynical and untrue image around Tiger, then a lot less defence would have been needed when that scandal broke. But they were building a whole person brand, so were hoist by their own petard.

In contrast, other golf brands such as Mizuno and Titleist have a much lighter hand on the golfer's whole image. So if Luke Donald was caught in a lap dancer scandal (as if), Mizuno won't have to defend a wholesome faux-image created around him.

Nike don't care that middle aged grumps like me don't care for them much, though.

I dunno mate,I think Tiger's own management (and Tiger himself) are more to blame for the way he handled that incedent, can you name any other Nike staff player who is subject to "heavy management presence",I sure can't!
