Which do you prefer, Drawn Comps or just putting your name down with mates?

Big Yes

If it was up to me it would be drawn for the OOM & the other big comps (captains , presidents )
, play with who you like in the others ..

I suppose it could be an issue at some clubs where this is the norm. All our "Silver Cup" rounds are drawn, the monthy stableford you can play with who you like, but the big comps are drawn.

i know from a couple of other clubs i've been a member at there have been whispers about certain folk, only scoring when they play with such and such.

My main point was, which do you prefer, not how it should be;)

I used to play a lot of opens, almost every week and they were all drawn and you never knew who you were playing until you stepped on the first tee. I wish i could get that mentality back. Some times i get very results driven and forget to enjoy it, which is not the case when ou play with mates a lot of the time.

Drawn comps for me..

I can play with my mates week in week out, but when it comes to comps I like to play in drawn events for a variety of reasons, one is the fact it does take people out of their comfort zones and you know its all more by the book

I do prefer playing with my mates, we only have a few ballot medals each year which is good. Managed to manipulate it this month as I put my name right above my mate on the timesheet and we got drawn together.

Although I will say I've met some decent people when playing in the ballot, in saying that i've also met some right ignorant b's too

I was drawn in a stableford comp last year. 2 ball, didn't know the guy. The guy lost his ball off the tee on the 17th. He just dropped one down by where it went in to the woods and played from there. I'm thinking "fine, he's playing up, but I'll just put him down for a blob". We check cards and agree each other's points then plug all the scores into the machine. He says "six" for himself on 17. I say, "no, that's a blob you have to put in a 0". He gets all arsey and says "but I'll get a no return". I politely explain he's wrong to put in a made up score in competition, and he won't get an NR anyway as it's a stableford points comp. And I won't put his card in signed with a six on it. We did it my way in the end but he wasn't happy. Incredible behaviour, makes you wonder how many people playing in competition actually have any understanding of the rules?

I prefer.....both:smirk:

It's good to meet and play with others, I can play with mates any day of the week.

Sometimes if I get the choice of adding my name I will choose someone I know is a decent person (not interested in their h/cap) as I want to enjoy the round whether I'm playing well or not.

I play with my mates all the time in bounce games, so when it comes to a comp then I quite like to be drawn and meet other people in the club. We don't really have drawn comps at our club but I put my name up at the time I want to play and am happy to go out with whoever chooses to get their names up alongside me.

ditto

whilst you can arrange to book into a comp 'together' if you are early enough, I just put my name down as close to the time I want that's available and play with whoever is either there, or joins me.

part of the fun

same with Opens; great opportunity to meet new people and play new courses

I love meeting and chatting with other golfers, don't get me wrong my mates are my mates and i'd do anything for them, but i wouldn't want to play golf with them every single week.
Drawn comps are my preference because of the social element and the possibility that there are some who don't always adhere to the rules when playing with friends.

Drawn for me as I play with mates in bounce games all the time and its good to meet other members etc. However we don't do drawn comps or Internet booking......

I have an issue with my club at the minute in that we have a start sheet go up at 6:30pm on a Thursday night for the weekend competition 9/10 days after. By 8pm the sheet is almost full so tee times are at a premium. We have lots of new members who want to play in the comps and too few comps (2 per month on the weekend). Occasionally there will be 3 in a month discounting midweek medals. By my reckoning with holidays and work travel I'll only play 6 qualifiers this year and two of those will be on the same day in our 36 hole handicap trophy.

We have a mixture of drawn competitions, and ones you can play with your mates. Given a choice I would play with my mates, as I know I will have a good time even if the golf is rubbish. With the drawn competitions, I can't remember not knowing at least one of the people I have been drawn with for a few years now. Last drawn competition we had plenty of chat and I had a captive audience that hadn't heard all my tall tales.:)

Forum Meets are obviously different as it is more a question of trying to avoid all the nobs.:whoo: (especially the ones that forget my birthday.)

Happy birthday!!!! I notice you age is missing. Can we have a guess???

Re the op. I've got a foot in both camps. I like playing with my mates, but it's possible to become a bit cliquey, so a mix of drawn comps and the chance to play with mates is perfect

It always helps if your playing with guys on or about the same sort of handicap as yourself, nothing worse than getting drawn with a "Weekend Warrior" you know the double digit guys who spray it all over the course and you spend half your day looking for their golf ball and then help then count their shots up, now that just ain't golf so in answer to your question the ones you can select who you peg it up with.
Jesus. Do people like this exist at all golf clubs ?

Think I might just be older than you.:p

Getting lumbered with two morose partners over 36 holes is not my idea of pleasure though.:( Unfortunately there are some people that just want to play their own game, and don't want the distraction of being civil. :mmm:

Really mate? Thats shocking! Surely they can manage one every weekend at least? No wonder you've got an issue.

Its a bit of a suprise as i thought clubs make a bit of money off the comps?

Our place is similar in that the sheet is in the clubhouse @8am and people have there names down on it for the same tee times every week at the same time which means that others can never get the early tee times, I think they should introduce drawn tee times to get people out of the habit of block booking the 7:30 to 9:30 tee times. And even if they are out on the course the comitee let someone lese put their name down for them.

I think you should put your own name down and not be able tp put anybody else's name down. If you cant get in call the club or email but not just shove a load of names in cause they already tee'd off.
