Which do you prefer, Drawn Comps or just putting your name down with mates to play in comps?

Our last comp was Drawn as is the next and again I’m playing with guys I don’t know. I looked back at my last few medals rounds when i played below handicap and each of those I played with someone I know quite well. Even the open I won last year I was playing with a mate who just happened to be in the same group.

It shouldn’t make any difference, but it does, I always play better when I play in a group of friends, much more relaxed and a bit of banter takes the mind of the scoring.

So what do you prefer and what do you think is better for your score in a comp?

Mates IMO golf is to be enjoyed with banter flowing if your playing partner can't raise a conversation or smile then spoils a good round

I prefer playing in comps when I can just put my name down with friends, however that is mainly because my window to play is usually quite small and drawn comps risk me playing at a time that is inconvenient. With regards to when I play better, that would probably be with strangers as I tend to focus too much on my friends games and not my own....

It always helps if your playing with guys on or about the same sort of handicap as yourself, nothing worse than getting drawn with a "Weekend Warrior" you know the double digit guys who spray it all over the course and you spend half your day looking for their golf ball and then help then count their shots up, now that just ain't golf so in answer to your question the ones you can select who you peg it up with.

Same for me, I'd much rather be playing with mates and people I'm comfortable with than strangers. I feel more relaxed and swing better. Obviously this makes me sound like a big girl, but there it is.

I will play with anyone really oooooo matron :).

I do when putting my name down for comps that arent drawn though tend to look for people who i know i would have an enjoyable knock with. Miserable/slow players are the main people i tend to avoid.

I have also started growing a strong dislike for people who say its "only a game" or "oh well, better than pushing the trolley around Tesco" when ive got a storming round going and ive just shanked one into the trees

The early slots in our weekend comps are always drawn. I know 90% of the guys who sign up regularly and so it isn't a problem. If you want to enter and play with mates you can roll up after the booked times. To be honest I prefer going out early (drawn) as I get the afternoon to spend with the wife and maintain the domestic status quo

ours are a mixture as the BRS system allows you to book 3 people in at a time so you can either just put your name down at the time you want and take your chances or organise your own 3 ball and play with mates.
i am quite happy to do either.

I haven't played in a comp yet, but having gone out for some handicap rounds with random people, it turns out I actually play much better with them than I do with my friends!!

I guess it's because I'm less competitive if I don't know my partner, and I don't try and match their drives like I would with my friends (who, being a fair amount taller than me, is a challenge, and rarely ends well!)

I play with my mates all the time in bounce games, so when it comes to a comp then I quite like to be drawn and meet other people in the club. We don't really have drawn comps at our club but I put my name up at the time I want to play and am happy to go out with whoever chooses to get their names up alongside me.

I've played with a number of people who have absolutely no clue on what to do in rules situations and will say that they always normally do it that way - they happen to be people who play in the same 3ball every week.

Almost word for word what i was going to type.

Wow, Really? I bet you're very welcoming!

In answer to the OP, I think I prefer mates as they know what you are capable of so if you do have a great round and score 40 points they have a bench mark to mark it against and you get a pat on the back. Playing with strangers and you're automatically tagged as the bandit!

Drawn - stops the cheats who only manage to score well with their mates!
