What's your preferred lay up distance?

What's the matter with you man? Can't you see those 3 ponds and 5 pothole bunkers greenside? 😃😃

Agreed and had twigged what you say but the edit window had closed.

If I decide to take the shot on, those ponds, bunkers and my stream magically seem to disappear!

100yds dead on. In the warmer months it is a full on PW, in winter it is a full 9 iron. I started to do this more and more last year as I left my ego behind and engaged my brain more. Works well for me.

100-120 unless there is danger in which case 50-60 as a 2nd option. I purposely practice to 50 yard markers as every driving range has a 50 yard marker

No preference for actual lay up distance for me. The nearer I am to the green the better my chances of hitting it. I'm quite happy to play half or three-quarter shots. For the lay up shot I will at least try and aim for the best line in.

85 +/- 5 yards is nice distance for a flick with my 52 wedge, knowing I can stop it quick. if I can get it greenside or close enough to chip I'll pretty much always take it on unless it requires unrealistic precision. 250-270ish is probably the grey area in normal conditions. Anything below I'll be going for it trying to leave a chip and putt. Anything above and I'll lay up with a mid iron. Anything in between requires more thought.

Worked hard on 100 yards and in. Had a definite game plan at Forest of Arden to not take on anything over 400 yards even if I hit a good drive figuring I had more chance of a par and certain bogey (net par) with a short iron in rather than taking a fairway wood or long iron and risking finding sand or worse. Seemed to work a treat. I need to play percentages at my own course more often but familiarity breeds contempt and I often feel I can take on shots at my home course I probably can't or shouldn't

so par 5's.

on the occasions the landing area for the driver has narrowed down some so not the optimum choice shot but 3 metal or hybrid, 2 iron from the tee, means going for broke on the 2nd could end up short sided of leave in the deep stuff or water. (but if there's a bunker guarding the front often times would plan to hit 3 metal/hybrid into it, depends where the pin is)

or driver from tee but the overall yardage of par 5 is say over 575.

with those 2 options it's 3 shots so I'd look to leave 85 yards in, smooth 3/4 SW (58º) hands down a 1&1/2" on the handle.

As close as possible, most HC golfers can miss as easily from 100-130 as they can from 220.

I don't always go for the green. I hit a iron second shot quite often but if the coast is clear I will have a pop and even miss on a certain side to leave a chip on.

Close as possible whilst staying safe for me.

This for me, proved that at fortrose last summer, drove the ball brilliantly and missed green after green and that was with all 3 wedges in my hands so I have no perfect distance, all clubs are equally either good or seriously poor.

That rather depends on the green and where the pin is. If I choose to layup I'm looking at anything between 80 & 120 yds but quite often I'll just try and get as close to the green as possible
