What's your preferred lay up distance?

I look at the merits of the hole. We have one par 5 at my club. If I find myself in range with my second I tend to go for it. There is little danger around the green other than 2 bunkers. I am comfortable with getting down in 3 for my par from around that green. The danger is from the tee so sometimes drop down to an iron off the tee rather than risk OOB.

If I am out of range, or on par 4s, I like to be 150-100 away, closer to 100 preferably depending on the hole. This isn't always the option though, the 2nd at my course you need to be as near the green as possible with your drive as you have no chance stopping on the green from more than 40 yards.

i dont have a preferred distance to be honest, i try and get as close (and safe) as possible with every shot. Whether that leaves me 100 or 30 yards in is a lottery! will have a go from there!

If i had to pick a distance i would go for 95-100 yards as that is a full 52 for me, but the reality is that if i cant make it, i will take as much club as is safe and then play from there usually.

As a short hitter on a long course I don't have the luxury of a preferred lay up distance, my 2nd to most par 4's is typically going to be short anyway so I want it as close as I can considering the hazards & green configuration on that hole and I'll deal with club selection for my 3rd when I get there

I (almost) always try to get as close to the green as I can. The only exceptions are when there's a lot of trouble that I want to make sure I avoid or when I know there's a pin position that is easier to go for with a full shot.

It is laying up. 30 yards, 50 yards, 70 yards, 100 yards it doesn't matter.

If I could reach the green with a well struck 3wood, but its too risky due to bunkers, run off area's etc, I will layup with an easy hybrid leaving me 30 yards short of the green.

in which case I had misunderstood your previous post - my apologies.

I've been wondering why I have NEVER got into thinking about lay up distance. I'm guessing it's because the muni course I learned on had very small hard greens and they weren't bunkered. So I just didn't play high pitch shots into them as you didn't need to to clear bunkers and in any case could rarely get ball to hold - so I taught myself to hit low bump and run pitch shots from all sorts of distances out. I just didn't play lobbed wedge shots into greens that much. When I had to get the ball up and down I opened up my 48deg pitching wedge and cut it up.

It's only two years ago that I bought a 52 and 56 as my 'cut up' Mickleson flop shot had gone wonky. And I found I could hit the ball into our greens using these clubs. But I still don't have any real feel for my best distance using either. So when I've decided that I'm not going for the green I don't think 'play for my favourite wedge distance' - I play to get my ball into the position from where I want to play my next shot - which I will usually have decided will be a pitch/bump and run type shot.

Haven't got one, I just try to get it as close to the target as I can.

This, we are handicap golfers, preferred distances don't come into it. The closer you are to the green the more chance of not "ballsing it up" you have. Golf is a wild stallion of a game, clinging on for dear life as long as possible before it all goes wrong. If it was a pony trek, it'd be boring.

I was standing at the range yesterday looking at the 75yard marker wondering why anyone would want to move further back. Anywhere inside 75 is so close you could throw it onto the green.

I get as close as I can without dramatically increasing any risks.
I'd rather chip or pitch then hit a full shot.

100-130 is good for me - but try and get it close as possible generally. Mark Broadie in every shot counts says all standard of players score better the closer they are so I'm not really convinced most players need to worry about layup distances unless they have partiqular problem with pitching.

I try to leave 100-110yd's which is a nice easy gap wedge. Most par 4s at my course are between 380- 440yd's so it's either 3/4 to full driver to leave nice easy shot in ☺
