What's your preferred lay up distance?

I try to leave 100-110yd's which is a nice easy gap wedge. Most par 4s at my course are between 380- 440yd's so it's either 3/4 to full driver to leave nice easy shot in ☺

Must be nice to be able to control a nice 3/4 swing with a driver!

It's a useful shot, try it on your tenth with a baby fade. Lets you get close enough to attack the pin whetever it is on the green.

Unfortunately I don't have the control to swing my driver on 75% power, I tend to use a fairway wood to hit it shorter.

The 10th, in summer, tends to be a hybrid or 4 iron, followed by a PW or 9 iron.
Or, if the round is going badl, a full driver drawn over the trees on the right hand side.

Leave yourself at the 100 yard marker and when you get to your ball you realise that it is a back pin adding another 10-15 yards, the wind has picked up adding another club and a half.

All of a sudden that 40 yard pitch isn't looking all that difficult.

Good point well made. Mind you I'd still fancy my chances with a PW or 9 iron but I do agree.

If you can play a 3/4 wedge you can play a 3/4 driver. It's a really easy shot. A tip i got on a day at the Belfry from Poulter courtesy of purchasing a Taylormade driver yonks ago from their fitting centre. He basically argued would you rather rip a 2 iron or pap a driver on links courses, I thought why stick to links courses and have used it ever since.

I can understand the 1st option taking the bunkers and trees out of play, but I think it's a little negative if you have the 3/4 driver fade option (with raised tees and wind I often like knocking shots down) allowing you to get into the realm of wedges / part wedges and attack that hole.

The 2nd option is very viable if you can guarantee not missing in the trees as it lets you attack or as you say if you have nothing to lose or in matchplay and is also an option on your 3rd if you know you'll find it.

Honest answer to the question? I dont know. I dont really have a favourite.

I usually try to get as close as possible and go from there. If there is big danger i will lay up to the safest place closest to the green etc.
