If I wasn't going to play Castle Stuart next April I don't really think I would be playing it at all, not at £150.

Nor would I. The fact that we are getting on for £50.00 is enabling me to play 3 other local courses for about the same full up 18 hole green fee as Castle Stuart.
£150.00 for 72 holes on four proper courses is worth the dosh but £150.00 for 18? Never.

You won't be playing Wentworth then? :)
That was my first courtesy which saved me £245 :D

Put it that way and it doesn't sound too bad for a weekend of golfing memories. Turn up and pay £150 to play a course once - no thanks. I doubt if I'd pay £50 to play anywhere, had to think several times about £45 in a fortnights time. It's not the money, it's what you get for the money. Played yesterday at WestHerts (Murphthemog's track) for £26 and it was lovely, no need to pay any more that that. If I wasn't playing with a member then I'd give it a miss too, £55 at weekends and I'd rather book a hooker. :p

I wouldn't baulk at a ton for a decent course.
£200? maybe for a once in a lifetime but.... is ANY course worth more than that?
I would be wanting to take 100+ shots just to get my monies worth ;)

I have and would happily again cough up £130 to play The Old Course....but isn't golf like going to Chelsea or Man Utd, you either stupidly pay up or manage to find someone else to 'pay for you'....?

Whilst these green fees must work for individual golf clubs, but for example, how many people 'actually' pay out of their own pocket to play whatever Wentworth is these days?

I would happily let someone else pay the big bucks, but there are always deals on offer or group benefits for all top courses, so I would wait for one of those. £100 is more than enough and I cannot think of a course anywhere in the world that would make me want to pay more.

When courses that charge huge fees can offer me more in a round of golf than lots and lots of courses can at half the price, then maybe I would have a think about it, but £150 or more and I would want a great course, a caddy, a naked lady stunner to give me all over massage before and after the round, a breakfast before, and a slap up meal after.
People with more money than sense drive these daft prices.

The Belfry is worth the money because of the prestige, facilities and course quality, but only just worth it.

Paid £95 to play Woodhall in june, both courses. Paid £35 for a round at Hollinwell, that was booked through my golf club, its usually £100 a day. Both courses in my humble opinion well worth the green fee. Would pay £160 to play RCD.
There are also an awful lot of good quality golf courses out there that are alot cheaper than the above. Courses that are not high profile, but just as satisfying to play.
As in life, you get what you pay for.
Although there are some instances where you pay well over the odds to play courses that are certainly not worth the green fee. Wentworth(£280) and the Belfry(£140) are just two that spring to mind.

If i could afford it i think i would pay whatever it would cost to play on some of the courses the Pros play on. Up to now the most i have paid is £50 but i think the fact that you can actually play on the courses that the Pros play is awesome. Although if you break it down as you have on the OP at a fiver a hole that does make it a bit off putting. I think you would have to take it as a whole thing and just (try) enjoy the experience.

Not a chance at those prices Bob.
About £70-£80.00 tops nowadays for a DAYS golf. But it would have to be somewhere very special to get me out for 36 holes 'cos I know the last 9 would be a struggle for me.
I quite fancy Woodhall Spa at sometime in the future and the prices they charge don't seem to be over the top.
But you've got the likes of St George's Hill and similar down this way charging £125.00 for a days play. They are nice courses, as are a lot of the Surrey heath and heather tracks, but not worth that sort of money.

120 at Carnoustie. Dont know if it's worth the money because right down the street at Penmure or Monifieth or a few miles up at Montrose you can play on a wonderful course for half the money. OK it isn't Carnoustie where Paddie won the Open. I admit though if you play from the medal tees the pound per shot ratio could be similar :p

I want to play old head of kinsale and would pay the £200ish fee though none of my mates would, so unless i play with a stranger it doesn't look like i'd get to play it.

In my opinion THE most overpriced golf course I can think of

I have always looked at paying high green fees this way...I used to play football and cricket to a high standard, the chances of me playing at Wembley, Hampden, Lords, or the Oval were nil, with golf I can play Birkdale, The Belfry St Andrews OC, Troon et al....for a one off its worth it. For the chance to tread the same fairways as the greats is worth it.
I once played Fulford in York straight after the old Benson & Hedges tournament, and the grandstand were still in place around the 18th, that was great.

I'm with you on that one, mancity. We're probably the only sport I can think of where merely getting your hand in your pocket allows the average Joe to play where the pros do. I played the Gary Player course in Sun City a couple of times with the stands up just before the Nedbank and it was a special experience...and all for £40.
