You're playing your club matchplay quarter final. You lose the 10th and 11th holes to fall back to 2up. On the 11th you hit your shot to 10ft from the hole, while your partner knocks it in to 15ft. He rolls hit putt narrowly past the side and it stops three inches away. He has a stroke on this hole so you need to hole the putt for a half.

Your partner's marker is bang on line for where you need to aim your putt so you don't concede the putt. Nothing is said.

As you're taking your practice swings, you notice that your opponent has picked up his ball without marking it.

What would you do??

Personally I give him the putt. If you can't conceed a putt when your opponent is 3" from the hole then you have issues. 4 inches and it's a different question entirely :)

Sorry, that original post shoul have read...

I would let him have it but tell him you'll be claiming it the next time he does it.

I'm struggling to understand how a marker 3" from the hole helps you line up a 10' putt though :D

If you haven't given the putt, his ball is still in play and by picking it up he is liable to a one stroke penalty. If he claims he thought he heard you giving the putt, there are grounds for the ball to be replaced without penalty. This happened to David Love against Mike Weir in a Presidents Cup once.

Think Seve & Tom Lehman at the Ryder Cup in 1995 :D

UN peace keepers were almost required when Lehman threw the toys out the pram at Seve's antics.

Anyway, in the OP he, the opponent, picked the ball up without marking it so a stroke penalty and he has to replace it where he lifted from and mark it correctly.

Sorry but the OP doesn't make sense.

We really need to know whether it was his partner or opponent who left the ball 3" from the hole, who's marker was already in place giving him the line, and who's ball was lifted and by whom.

Once we have a clearer picture we can all scratch our heads and say "dunnow" :)

Something wrong with anyone who would make someone mark a ball 3" from the hole, 3' yes different story. I dont care what competition your playing 3 inches is 3 inches. I know everyone likes to win but for crying out loud..............

Also, if it was three inches away, wouldn't you simply say "OK to knock this away?". Even if it your partner had to knock it away, surely he simply walks up and taps it away.
Marking it simply slows up play, doesn't it?

The way I read it is this...
The first guy putts it to 3 in.
The second guy thinks "if he marks that, that will be a perfect line for me to aim at. So he doesn't give him it, he has to mark it giving him a line.

Stroke play.
If he asks him to mark it and it's in stroke play what could the first guy do?
