Also, if it was three inches away, wouldn't you simply say "OK to knock this away?". Even if it your partner had to knock it away, surely he simply walks up and taps it away.
Marking it simply slows up play, doesn't it?

You could simply say that but you don't have to, also being matchplay he cannot tap it in without your ccnsent, so if you want him to mark it he as very litle choice.

As Bob said if it was stroke play your opponent could just tap it in, end of issue.

I'd have no problem giving him the shot. What I would have a problem with is his assumtion that I'm going to give him the shot and then picking the ball up without my agreeing to it.

Yes, should be your hole, he can't just pick up the ball if you don't concede the putt. That said, it's a very odd thing to do but it takes all sorts I suppose.

I was a little confused to begin with but I think the confusion was between Partner and oponant, but unless there is some agreement at the begining of the match that anything under a certain distance is a gimme, then you won the hole the moment your opponant picked his ball up without marking it. Unless you or your partner say they can have it, they cant!
Thank them for the hole and move on.

Would'nt a true Gentleman have advised him of his error but as gentlemen agreed to let them replace the ball at no cost or even better just accept that the hole was lost and allow them to have it?

Gentlemanly conduct only stretches so far when games are to be won and lost, thats why so many golfers always want to do things just to see the look on anothers face
