Unbelievable !!!!!!

Sorry have to feel for the guy. My best was 51points, of 20 H/c I think. I did not play well but fluked alot. One hole they had on a temp green. Must have shortend it by 50yrds. Normally it has a stand of trees infront of a stream, just in front of the green. The temp green was now infront of all this. It was my 2 shot hole. I hit a rubbish but straight drive, that just kept running and running. Just to the front of the green. left a 40/50 foot put that I somehow got. So an eagle on a hole I get 2 shots on. It was just one of those day. No matter how, badly I hit the ball it finished up ok. You know the sort of thing. Drive OOB hit a rock or something and bounce back into the middle of the fairway.

This was about 20 years ago by the way!

Isn't that 9 under handicap?

No! My statement (well, the pair) was accurate and unambiguous (almost). Yours was not.

A judiciously placed 'for' might make yours better (and ...'below CSS + handicap...' might have been better in mine).

My pedantry is 'better' than yours!:ears:

If you want a duel in pedantry - mine was a question, not a statement.

Nah sorry, dont buy it.
It seems to be the norm now and accepted that someone can be that far under their handicap without cheating.
I agree, people do have good days but that would account for the 6 and 7 unders...not 12.
His handicap is at least 6 too high

No i disagree with you here Bob. I had played on and off as pay and play for 10 years shotting in the mid 90s to 100s. I eventually joined a club and over 3 or 4 years my initial handicap of 24.something got down to 19.6.
At about that time, the lowest round i had ever shot was 87.
i then played in a small society day, and shot 79 on a par 71 course. 8 shots better than my lowest ever score, and 11 or 12 under handicap.
i wasnt a cheat, i had a long established handicap that i could normally play to but usually didnt.
This coiincided with a period of a few weeks when i played twice a week and it all clicked that day.
I took the card to my handicap sec expecting a 3ish cut on my handicap and they just ignored it. I left the club and joined my current club.

Sorry Bob, i disagree with you on this one. he might be a cheat, but he quite probably isnt

I very rarely got over 40 pts because I was cut on general play a lot.

That is the difference. When general play was used by secretaries that knew the clubs members, handicaps were cut without a card in competition. Now supplementary cards are used by those who want to put them in but they may play poorly and get 0.1 back. Those that don't want to get cut except in competition, (or don't know they exist) don't put in supplementary cards. That means that that most cuts come via competition and can be drastic and it may seem as if players are bandits.

I like using supplementaries when I can't play in a comp for a few weeks but have got 0.1 back as often as I have a cut.

General play could be a bit severe from what I have heard - I was not a member when it was used - but secretaries knew their players more. Maybe , the end of year review deals with some problems but not all.

Confused a bit with that ?
You may have done that a number of years ago in a friendly society day out off the yellows. But things are different these days.
This guy did it under the pressure of a club comp.
Congu these days are also a lot tougher on h/cap secs dishing out cuts when they see fit which makes it a lot easier for some ne'er do well to keep his handicap high.
I still say he tilted the playing field a bit in his favour.
Better ? ;)

I can understand the confusion, it's a sign of age :) he he he

yes, better

At least he has started to be cut so the chances of a repeat would seem remote. I would be dubious on face value but not knowing the player, how many competitive games he plays and if these are regular and what the cours and conditions are like I guess you have to take it at face value. I guess if you have 40+ points and lose you just take personal satisfaction and move on

fella i played with tonight plays off 22 and had 28 points on the front 9. ended up with 46 points. should be in for a big chop as he started off the year on 25 and should get cut an extra 2 ontop of whatever he normally gets cut under the new fast track system put in place this year!

It was said once upon a time that to play to your handicap you have to play well
So to beat your handicap if only by a few you would have to play very well
To beat your handicap by 3 or 4 shots, you would have to play incredibly well
I dont care if it was 12 or 14 under his handicap the guy has has played incredibly well and with a wrong handicap and that to me is cheating.

When I started playing again after 10 years, I joined a club and after a handful of rounds put in cards for my handicap, they were 113,112,111,113 I got 34, then I play a comp and scored net 73 and a one shot reduction, next I scored 42 pts and got a 4 shot reduction, followed by a net 70 for a 3 shot reduction plus shots ESR.
I am playing 4 times a week, thats not cheating its improvement.

I totally agree with you.
Net 73, 42 pts and net 70 are a great result and shows you are working hard.
This guy with 50 pts is equivilent to you scoring net 59/60

I'm with you on this Sev.

Golfers can be incredibly inconsistent and capable of very wide-ranging scores from one day to the next at every level. Does that mean that when they have a blinder, they automatically have to be labelled a cheat? Not so sure about that. Seem to remember Mike Donald once opening up with a 64 in the Masters and then following it up with an 82 the next day. A shot a hole difference in 24 hours from a top professional.

I'm sure there are a few people out there deliberately playing the system, but as I've said on here before, I've only ever come across one in my 25+ years playing
