• Thank you all very much for sharing your time with us in 2025. We hope you all have a safe and happy 2026!

Things you see others do.

People who fire shots at you when you're leaving the green! Played the week before the last in a team open at my club and on our 17th hole when you finish putting you have to walk off the front of the green and around a bunker that's on the left. We were walking off and one of the guys behind plays a shot that misses one of us by 5 yards and goes in the bunker. When the blokes get down to us my playing partner says "what was that about? You almost hit us!" The bloke goes "it was 250 yards into wind with an iron, I didn't think I'd get there" my playing partner replies "well you almost hit us, you should have waited until we were gone!" Then the idiotic bloke goes "you shouldn't have been walking back up the fairway, get on with your effing game!" (We walked the correct way where eveeyone walks) . We thought he would have at least said sorry to us, but instead we get verbally abused by him for doing nothing wrong! Turns out he was a member of club in Gloucestershire, absolute idiot.

People who spend ages looking in the rough for rogue golf balls whilst their playing partners are taking their shot. You should be either getting ready to take your shot, or looking where your partners ball is going. NOT, trying to find a stray Pro V1 that you will use for the next 6 months, until the cover is falling off and it no longer even slightly resembles something round........

Oh, and if its got my initials on it, I want it back......Now....

What do you see others do that you think to yourself "if you didnt do that you might do
it better".
And things you do yourself that might help you

Players who blame pace of play for their own poor performance.

It's a part of the game, practice it!

Any club pro will happily sell you a lesson on this, why spend £'s changing your clubs, swing, posture etc etc when you know you cant hit it for toffee just because you've had to wait a few minutes!

People holding their putter up in the air when looking for the line for the putt!! Then overshoot the hole and goes inches wide because it doesnt work!

It's called plumb bobbing, it doesn't give you the line, it identifies which way the slope goes if it isn't obvious! It works and is basic physics, try it.

Unfortunately this goes hand in hand with the people that moan that someone waits 10 minutes for the green to clear from 250yds and then duffs it - sometimes they DON'T

It's a no win situation.... but if you THINK you have a chance of making it to the green DON'T HIT IT when there's people in the line of fire.

There's normally at least one in every 4-ball

Tried it a few times and for me it doesn't work! I play with a gentleman who does this on every hole. I don't think I've seen him hole anything more than 5ft with this "plimb bobbing" technique.

Each to their own, and that really isn't for me.

I'm sure all of us have our little pet hates on the course, but some people just don't have a clue when out there!! Agree with a lot of comments on here but I think a few people just need to chill out out a bit, chat and have a laugh at the tee instead of worrying about everyone on the course. Should be thankful you are out on the course and in the fresh air doing something you love. There are people out there younger than me who played golf and no longer can.

Sorry but that needed to be said. Maybe you think I'm wrong but isn't golf about having a laugh with your mates and challenging yourself??

I agree with this 100% I play golf because I enjoy it. I'm not on the PGA tour & if I miss a green it's not the end of the works. Me & my playing partners have a bit of banter whilst still trying to shoot the best scores we can.

This seems to have gone from "What do you see people do that can only hurt their game" to "What gets your goat on the course".

Someone mentioned players behind hitting approach shots when you've only just got off the green.

There's a hole at ours where you could be in danger walking off the green to the right until you make it to a footbridge, and time after time I see players hitting well before the group in front are safe, and quite often they're hitting from the right rough!

They've just missed a 30yd wide fairway by 10 yards on the right, and they now think it's safe to go with people 10yds right of the green they're aiming at! </rant>

One of the detrimental things I see is people standing over the ball for an eternity before hitting it. What on earth are they thinking about for so long? The results are rarely pretty. They might as well just get on and bash it quickly, it couldn't lead to a worse result!

HA! i play with 2 people like this , both study the golf swing to such detail theyve forgotten what they actually want to do on the course cos theyve got so many swing thoughts going thru their heads

marking scorecards on the green does my nut in , get off the flipping green

My thoughts exactly! The original question was interesting because observing faults in others might help us realise we do the same.

Telling us you hate slow players ain't helping anyone (but it's good to get it off your chest) :)

Actually not at all, I know exactly how far I hit it, but am fed up with hearing from average club players who think they out hit the pros and then hit the ball the same distance as me.

Spot on! I know I can hit a long drive but no where near the distance pro's get! We have a few at our club who say oh i can make that 350 yard par 4 in one! Then you say, oh whats your handicap. 24! Ok so you may have done it once, in summer, with the wind behind you on a bone dry fairway going downhill???

They are only fooling themselves. I know how far I can hit every club and I'm happy like that :)

If you carry - don't carry your bag upright on your back as if you are carrying a quiver of arrows - because if you look like an archer you'll play like an archer and I never saw an archer successfully release a golf ball from his bow. Spot someone carry in this manner and you can bet they haven't played much at all and they can hardly hit a ball. So don't tempt fate by doing it yourself.

:mmm: When I played as a kid, I always carried and there was just one strap on your bag for one shoulder. None of this modern day twin strap. Hate getting harnessed up for short walks around the green etc, so will carry on one shoulder still. My first twin strap carry bag, I actually cut the second strap off.

So not sure you are right about not having played much, but you could be right about hardly being able to hit a ball.;)

I play with a few older guys that do that, as bending too much hurts their backs these days.

Which is fair enough, IMHO.
Hope the greenkeeper doesn't see them. Best way to break down the sides of the hole.

My pet hate is players that miss a putt, and then smack there ball across the green in anger. Played an open event and someone did this, topped the ball straight into the green, and made a huge hole right on my line.:(

One of my playing partners had five putts on our first green once from about 15 feet, and with his 6th putt tried to smack it back to his bag, and only managed to knock it into a bunker. The group behind were none too pleased having to wait for him to collect it and rake the bunker.

Fair comment! It's pretty rare that you see someone carry their bag like that playing anything resembling decent golf.

Think you've misunderstood I always carry and often for short walks neglect the 2nd strap, but (I think) what SLH is getting at is carrying the bag backwards so that the bag stands vertical or with the base in front of the "golfer" rather than horizontal across the back.

I thought an archer carried his quiver on his back, upright so the arrows don't fall out ? If you carried the quiver with the base in front of you wouldn't the arrows go straight up your nose ?:)
