• Thank you all very much for sharing your time with us in 2025. We hope you all have a safe and happy 2026!

Things you see others do.

One of my playing partners is one of the most erratic drivers of the ball that I have seen yet he insists on lining up the arrow on the side of the ball when on the tee. Will even re-adjust it a matter of millimeters before teeing off then proceed to slice, fade, pull, hook or draw it (there is no telling which will happen).

He is also another one that insists on hitting the same club as the big hitting low handicapper in our group and comes up 2 clubs short every time.

My mate plays right handed but as his right hand above his left. I haven't a clue how he does it. He shoots high 70s low 80s:confused:

Have you noticed that beginners always seem to leave their bag a long way from where their taking the shot.

I have noticed that whatever group is in front of me has someone who always leaves there bag as far from there putt as they possibly can...

I also have a friend who does this, and he often challenges the guys he plays with to try it.

Don't. Unless you want a sky mark on your driver. It is remarkably difficult to do, it takes several goes to make contact, and then you roof it.

Trying to play shots that are 1 in 5 chances that will ruin their card if it goes wrong.

1 or 2 bad shots leads to "I can't putt/chip/drive!" (delete as appropriate)

Linked to the first one... following an awful mistake with another awful mistake.

Using a lob wedge on a flat shot from 3' off the green.

Trying to keep up with the longest driver in the group.

Gerry Daly the former footballer does that, he was a single figure golfer when I knew him.

One guy I played with a few times last season thought you were meant to hit ground and then ball, but obviously only just before. He was amazed when he could shots heavy and I never could get him to understand it should be ball first.

The #1 thing that I see people do that does them no good is mistakenly believe that new clubs, balls, shoes, gloves, putters, wedges and so on..... will make even the slightest difference to their scorecards. They won't. Unless they keep them for ten years and play 3 times a week with them. But then, the improvement does not come from the equipment.

The other thing that baffles me is the meticulous attention to golf clothes that some men have. The Gok Kwan's of the fairways. Good to be in touch with your feminine side I guess. Not that I'd know. I am an alpha male and don't own a white belt or any loud trousers. Forget the posh clothes and concentrate on hitting the rights shots would be my advice.

People holding their putter up in the air when looking for the line for the putt!! Then overshoot the hole and goes inches wide because it doesnt work!

People who score their card on the front of the green whilst someone is waiting to tee off! just do it at the next tee like everyone else.

People who don't clean their clubs or wear the same clothes/waterproofs that still have mud on from the last 90 rounds they have played. I like to look nice on the course with clean clothes! Doesn't take much to do.

Rant over, sorry chaps

This is me Gary! :)

I bet your lob wedge shots are low ones that check up on the 2nd or 3rd bounce?

My mate's are high flops with hands that flip through the ball. I'd guess he hits a thin or fat one every ten shots. Scares me every time I watch him.

As for the long driving, have you considered a new custom fitted driver? ;)

I will not list all of them as we could be here all day, so this is just a select few:

People that insist on using clubs that are not right for them, ie the 18 handicapper that stands on the tee with an 8* X-stiff shafted driver then slices it across 3 fairways and proceeds to tell you all about how he struggles with consistency off the tee.. He then plays his next shot with his rifle 6.5 shafted muscle backs and cocks another shot up and tells you again how with a bit more consistency he could be a good golfer.

Some of the comments people feel the need to use on the course like "well out" when you play a bunker shot. Clearly is wasn't well out as I got it a bit heavy and left it 10 foot short. Just because someone thinks getting out a bunker in one shot, irrespective of how close it ends up to the hole is a good shot, it does not mean we all feel that way.

Think you need to spend less time around other humans.....

you do realise whats gonna be said at Kenilworth if you have to play any bunker shots lol :p

People who insist their 220 yard drive has gone 270/280 and that they often hit 300 yards plus. FFS look at the stats from the tour, are you really as good as them????

Lots of golfers hit the ball a long way. I take it you are challenged in that department?
