Some goal that from Haaland and not sure there are too many other like that. Mind you Barca were impressive and Raphina has come alive with 9 goals in 13 appearances in La Liga and CL. Bayern only 23rd in the table. Another defeat and could they be in real trouble??

Nah...even if they finish 9th -24th I'd expect them to have a decent chance of making it through the playoffs over two legs, there's not as much jeopardy in this league thing as commentators/pundits might like to make out.

Now...if they made it a straight cut of the top 16 only....that would be more interesting.

What I do like about this new format is that it is throwing up some really juicy matches much earlier in the comp than the old format ever would. Already we have seen...

Man City v. Inter
Milan v. Liverpool
Barca v. Bayern
Madrid v. Dortmund
Arsenal v. PSG

and still to come...

Madrid v Milan
Inter v Arsenal
Bayern V PSG
Liverpool v Madrid
Dortmund v Barca
Juventus v Man City
PSG v Man City

Last year the best you would have got in the first phase was was Bayern v. Man U and in one group the series of games between PSG, Dortmund and Milan

Man Utd are playing Fenerbache with Maureen there of course and there was a discussion this morning about if Man Utd fans would swap managers etc

Man Utd fans called in and were talking about the club going for managers like Emery and Franks etc

The question is - would the like of Emery jump to Man Utd right now - has the stock fallen that far to suggest that managers wouldn’t immediately jump from a Villa , Brentford etc to go to United ?

Not that I want a new manager of course, but I've heard this argument a lot. To me, it makes little sense and seems to contradict a lot of other things pundits say.

Man Utd finished 8th last season, and not a great start this season. Every day, in media and social media (like here), people can't express their views quickly enough about how bad a manager ETH is. Most of the blame is put on him towards Utds terrible form, style of play, etc. So, presumably, the implication is that if a great manager came in, they would be able to do a much better job?

Yet, when talk of other managers coming into Utd, the same people then say "why would a great manager want to go to Man Utd?". Well, the answer would be that if the manager is truly a great manager, and they have confidence in their ability, then they would be able to do a job that most people criticise ETH of not being able to do. Whereas, if people genuinely believe that Man Utd is a bad place for even the best managers to go and manage, then perhaps they should stop blaming ETH for Utd's results and instead look at whatever reason they think it is that they think would make the great managers fail.

P.S. Yes, Aston Villa are doing very well, so I don't see why Emery would want to leave anyway this season, especially given their position in Champions League. But Frank at Brentford, why would he go if asked? I mean, Man Utd were awful last year and finished 8th, Brentford finished 16th. I can think of a few reasons why he may want to go to Utd if asked.

The reality is that Man Utd would probably double the salary of Emery, triple or more that of Franks. Throw in the bonuses and the chances are that both would move. Money talks. I don't think the cache of Utd holds as much value right now but money usually comes through as the winner.

If I was Emery's agent I would tell him to stay at Villa. He is clearly a great fit for the club, the club are moulding around him as well

Franks is surely up for a big job soon, apologies Brentford. He can afford to wait for a club that is in less of a mess than Utd are.

Yeah money will always win

We had the same sort of issue after Hodgson and the state of the club at the time , Kenny was given the job and then when looking for someone to replace him I wouldn’t have expect to many top managers to jump at the job

Agree on Franks - he is a very good manager and I’m surprised someone like Bayern didn’t look at him

Emery - the Real job is coming up next year it seems , talk of Alonso getting it but Emery might be there , also maybe the City job might be available

I think Emery would be mental to go for a "bigger" club again. Look what happened at arsenal. The fans and the board expect more so pressure is higher. I'm sure villa fans will agree they don't expect for example to qualify for the champs league every year so if this year they "only" got Europa they would be grateful but if it was man united the board would be disappointed

Managers, like players, have sufficient egos to believe they can always work well, no matter the club. Emery would happily move to one of the European elite and believe he would win with them. He could well be right, it was just the wrong time with Arsenal. As I said though, I hope that he stays where he is.

I think it's great him being at villa, long may it continue

One team in claret and blue needs to do well

Emery was going in after Wenger - always a tough ask and his first season he moved the team on a bit - second just started poorly , for some reason he was looked down on when his record was clearly very good
