However with all due respect we have bred unsafe driving habits
No way is 5 hours 15 and 7 hours driving safe.
Every 2 hours is a 15 min break recommended I believe
Even lorries have a max drive if 4 hours 30 no?
A quick stop , just to freshen up and grab a drink isnt going to drastically increase the journey but will reduce the risk of accident.

Which is it?
A quick stop or a fifteen minute break every two hours?
No way am I going to stop for that long every two hours.

15 mins is a quick stop.

the aa recommend

How should I plan for driving a long distance?

Even experienced HGV drivers are prevented from driving more than 9 hours in a day or working for over 13 hours in a day. Most car drivers are nowhere near as used to driving for this long, so always keep these recommendations in mind if you're planning a long road trip.

  • Don't drive for more than 8 hours in a day
  • Take regular fifteen minute breaks in journeys over three hours
  • Aim to stop every two hours or so, especially if you're not used to driving long distances
  • Plan journeys so that you can take breaks, allowing for an overnight stay if necessary
  • Don't start a long journey if you’re tired

Interesting Bob….Before Easter I drove from Essex to West Cumbria, it’s 325 Miles took me 5 and 15 minutes, average speed was 62 Mph…

Return journey on bank holiday Monday was 7 hours, average speed 46 Mph.

Add both journeys together and it comes to 53 Mph!

Hate to urinate on the EVangelists dogma but both journeys were done in one stint. No problem at all.

Nothing to do with being an EV driver - just the common sense advice given out by the police about how long you should drive before taking a break.

I'm sorry fade and die but now on earth can you even justify a 7 hour drive with no stop?

As @Neilds said just because you can do something doesn't mean you should

You arrogance towards driving could end up killing someone.

Take some responsibility.
That’s the thing Paul, I don’t need to justify it. I am free to do what I think is best for me and my family.

Are you so weak minded that you need to be told by someone else what to do in every aspect of your life?

thing is slime its not just your funeral ..

15 minutes is not a quick stop when done every couple of hours.
Oh, and please don't tell me what I should keep in mind when planning a long road journey.

its not weak minded tho is it. I cant believe thats your line of defense

its not just YOU and YOUR family

you are risking the lifes of people around you that you dont know

you will most likely live. but hey that car you wipe out on your 5 hour drive and take out a young family..

then you have to live with that forever

whatever .. if you want to be arrogant about it thats fine.

but its amazing just how many lack attitudes to driving we have on the roads.

different times where knowledge has been learnt from the passed

id hope as a dad you would teach your kids basics like this

but hey

But What about all the new gizmos on my car then?
Lane departure
Adaptive cruise control
Anti collision sounders
Blind spot indicators.

Gives me a tremendous sense of safety. 😁

If you have Google Earth, calculate how long it takes to travel 50 miles.
From my house to Corby is 49 miles and would take 1hr 7min today
I suppose it comes down to which part of the country you live in and when you travel.

I had one journey last year Yeovil to Hertford (150 miles) which took 7 hours. If I travel very late at night that journey time will be around 3-4 hours with 3 fairly short comfort breaks.

The amount of time getting past Stonehenge alone has probably taken months of my life in the 40 years I have travelled up and down the A303.

all have been developed to help counteract the stupidity of humans who cant safely operate their cars because they are driving for too long.

still cant solve all accidents

I am of an age whereby lorry drivers did not have tacho fitted and that was probably the sort of attitude taken by the hundreds of lorry drivers involved in serious accidents due to driving for too long which bought about the legislation.

I don’t drive a lorry?

But my Dad did, I remember his cruise control for his Scammel was a bit of 4x2 jammed on the accelerator, and he used to steer with his knee whilst rolling a fag! 😱
Lawks how did we survive such dangerous times!

There in lies the problem and awful lot of people did not survive as a result of one persons thoughtlessness and belief in their own invincibility.

Half of technology and safety systems only exist today due to mistakes of the past.

To think until 1987 smoking was allowed on the tube until the king cross fire.

It's a shame we like to wait until disaster hits until we look at our own behaviour but hey, saved 30 mins on my drive .. win 🤔

Anyway, if the guy wants a car that will cover 350 miles, he could start with the VW id 3 357 miles.

Then go into the bigger cars, Tesla model 3 LR 389 miles, or the Merc Eqs at 414 miles

I tend to stop every two hours or so.
Just to get some circulation back in my backside.
I couldn’t drive for four hours but some people can ( my dad drove a wagon )each to their own.

But on the safety side some people are dangerous before they have left the road they live in,
