The all things EV chat thread

I watched this yesterday, brilliant bargains to be had.

What stood out most is what actions Scotland are doing to encourage switching to ev

Up to 30k loan interest free to get an EV. Now with used prices so low ATM that's a very good offer.

I just don't get why England don't follow suit? It isn't a money loser because you get the money back you just don't make interest on the loans. Why not offer that to help people into cars rather than not?

Well done Scotland
If the money comes from existing funds then it is money that could be spent elsewhere rather than, arguably, helping wealthy people buy a car. £30k per car is a lot.

If the govt have to borrow the money to fund this then they will be paying interest and so it a money loser for the tax payer.

Helps people tho. It's up to 30k tho, that video shows just how many cars could be available for under 15k . Good family cars that would suit a lot of people's needs

Anything that helps net zero

I know nationwide offered 0% mortgages on green projects like panels etc

Edit just looked at the last point I could borrow 15k for solid wall insulation (which is my ideal next project) over 5 years at 0% with nationwide for £250 a month to insulate the house

Very interesting 🤔

I haven't looked at the video/website. Are the loans for second hand cars as well? Traditionally they would be for new cars only, reducing the number of people interested or capable of buying significantly.

Here we go, yeah it's second hand cars

New cars don't look to be on the list

If Battery and charging is your thing, then a good video

Yeah pretty interesting. I don't know how prevalent the cheaper rate, restricted hours tariff options are worldwide, but they may help (accidentally) with this in the UK.
Plus maybe good info for those sticking with a 3 pin charging approach, who also may be less likely to do large charges.

Boring update number 15471

When I got my EV I didn't know which charger to get. Smart tariffs weren't what they are now .. it was just get a charger and a smart meter to get on octopus go

I want to try and get on intelligent octopus , it will save me £105 a year in usage and because the solar feed back would rise 8p a kw I'd get an extra £70 a year on top

So I contacted octopus to find out cost to upgrade my charger to a zappi (prefer to an ohme) they said they won't replace only install new £1000

I've got in touch with guy who's worked on the house before just to price up a zappi (their £680 ISH on their own) and just simply replace the podpoint using the same wires (I could get some money back selling the podpoint on eBay)

It has a CT clamp , rcd cut out, 32 amp feed etc so won't take him long

Would do myself but just incase I'd rather a sparky did it

The loan scheme is no longer in operation. There are currently no plans to re-introduce it. Currently available for businesses only.

Even for businesses it's been reduced to a [small] grant rather than a loan.

From what I have been told, the uptake was not high enough for it to be viable.

Ironically the uptake now with prices lower might be more. When it was 30k second hand as @Lord Tyrion points out that's a lot of cash but if it's 15k I'm not saying that's small change but compared. It's affordable

From the info I have it was not the cost of vehicles that was the issue. It was to do with the application/approval levels.

Cheers for that Greig,

Wonder if banks will start doing interest free. They are for green improvements on house

If it's still around in few years might get solid wall insulation if it's that %

In reality, Scotland has enough worries about its financial situation at the moment. Funds could be better spent elsewhere. I could say more but I would be in danger of going political.

The thread is back… well done everyone…

It is also a good training for EV owners.. we r used to sitting in their car for 30 mins charging while doing bugger all..

Just a reminder on charging etiquette from the Yanks.

Im considering going EV when my current work lease is up. As part of the lease of the EV they will install a 7kW charger at my house.
The options are Ohme or Pod Point. I have had a quick look online and there doesn't seem to be much difference between them.
Do any of you guys in the know have any idea which one is the best to go for?

Ohme

Podpoint looks better (I have that) but ohme unlocks smart charging (I'm considering switching to ohme)

Ohme you can go on octopus intelligent (6 hours at 7.5p then rest at 31p) it also unlocks OVO charge where whenever it charges it's 7p or something

But ohme is the best one for unlocking smart tariffs

Thanks for that

I was leaning towards the Ohme anyway. I probably wont be ordering the car till next month to try and time it with my current lease ending so just need to hope the prices do not go up too much
