I've just received my home insurance renewal quote from Saga.
2023... £107
2024...£295
It seems insurance is through the roof on everything, not just EVs

And a lack of qualified staff to carry out said repairs, oh and the lack of availability of neccessary spares as well.

Same with all cars. Shortages of parts leading to write offs over repair as insurance companies don't want to pay for hire cars for longer and longer whilst the part is on back log.

Is there a typical % higher that an EV car insurance is higher than a similar ICE car for the same driver? Would be interesting to have this when calculating overall costs.

I have long suspected that there's a bit of a scam going on between repairers and car hire companies.
As soon as they know it's an insurance job, the repairs seem to take way longer than you'd expect.
Almost as if they're colluding to extract more car hire charges than necessary.
The fact that my last repair job was organised by Enterprise just increases my suspicions.

Could be the case, I know when I had a light repaired on the Corsa last winter think it was took 7 days enterprise really was struggling to get hold of cars because of the car part shortage they couldn't get new cars and their leases were up on their current cars

I've heard of a quashie being written off because on that model the led light got smashed and the part was on back order so because of the extended wait to finish the repair the insurance company wrote off the car instead of paying for the hire car for such a long time

My latest policy they were desperate for me to not have a hire car as standard

Sadly you are wrong.
Insurance companies DO NOT choose to write off a car and pay out, they are made to by the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Insurance companies want quick repairs, not cars sat around running up hire fees more than is normal.

I insure with Aviva, the additional premium was just £40 for the remaining 9 months above what I had paid for a similar spec petrol.

The premiums are expected to rise a lot due to the time it takes to get spare parts when in for repair and the the additional cost of loan cars

I went away for Christmas and very quickly realised the difference in dual carriage/motorway driving battery life compared to my normal round town. I did not keep exact figures but it has made me think in terms of halving the expected range for future similar journeys. Good experience of finding places to charge up but I was driving outside of peak hours.

I read this today, talks about journey from M5 all the way into Scotland as they test 3 cars and the motorway charging infrastructure

Tesla wins.. but also shows the lack of infrastructure and how much we lack in this space. Mind you the article is from 2022, so things would have improved since then

From my colleagues experience I was told if you do a lot of long trips get a Tesla if not just any will do .. their supercharger network is outstanding

I find lowering your speed to 60 and cruising in the slow lane can make for a more relaxing trip

My daily commute is on the north circular which is dual carriageway but limit is 50 so doesn't affect me

In 2022 in the UK there were 37,261 charging points.
In 2023 in the UK there are 52,933 charging points.
An increase of 15,672 in one year.
