The reason Cantlay is not wearing a cap had been made clear. He caused a rift in US team by saying that they should be paid to play in Ryder Cup (they get paid for Presidents Cup).
He isn't wearing a cap as a protest. This is according to an article on Sky Sports

The Ryder Cup is Match Play. So every game will be full of match play moments. 100% of shots are match play moments, and some of those will inevitably be big shots.
If McGinley had never been Ryder Cup captain, would any of us remember who he was? Would he have got a job as a pundit on Sky?
