What’s gone wrong? Why? And what can fix the player I’m interested in watching the most?

He is just having a poor major and he couldn’t recover from yesterday. But the course and the conditions just didn’t suit his game yesterday. Don’t see the need for major overhaul for him , having a good season so far.

Very easy to simply blame the conditions but they are easier than yesterday and there are scores being made. McIlroy is missing greens with wedges in his hand and he's not really not featured in the majors (the T5th at Augusta excepted) and surely for him it's about trying to win majors. Not sure I'd say he's having a good season. Still to inconsistent and no plan B. He has to learn how to play these courses and too simple to say they don't suit. What happens if the poor major form continues at Carnoustie? Is that simply another course he can't play

Rory’s just not as good as we expected.
Hes good, but he’s no better than other top players.

Masters wasn’t good though.

It all depends on what you expect , McIlroy is a streaky player , when he is on no one can touch him but when he struggles at times he just seems to lose the will to fight especially when he knows he isn’t going to win. At the Master he just didn’t get anything going early enough to give him that little kickstart.

McIlroy isn’t going to win week in week out , he isn’t going to challenge for Majors all the time , the playing field now appears to be at the highest level with really top quality players right at the top and every player need to be at the top of their game to win in a major. This course appears to suit DJ but not McIlroy - it could be a total turnaround come the Open or US PGA.

It’s the same with players like Day or Garcia - the first round kills them and it’s on a course that is hard to attack to get a 63 to get back into it.

No player is the master of all that’s before them and in a major not all the top players are going to play well - it’s going to be an excited couple of years ahead with all these high quality players going at it with Rory slap in the middle of them.

I think there is a lot in this. We thought he was going to be a superstar, rip up courses and destroy fields on a regular basis. May be, at this point in his career, we just have to 're-evaluate the player he is and put him in the pack with a number of others. Still a top player but no better than the rest.

Perhaps people can now stop saying, 'on his day' blah blah.

Only needs confidence on the greens. When he has it he’s virtually unstoppable; without it, the lack of confidence and frustration spreads to the rest of his game. Hope he continues to work with Faxon who advocates a simple, uncluttered “go after it” mindset with the putter.

he won 4 majors (first 2 by 8 strokes) between 2011 & 2014 and not won much since. 4 years is a long time but I do agree golf is very strong right now, still think he needs a big change.

Been said before but he hasnt been the same since he left Titliest for the big bucks

He won a further two majors plus the Fed Ex plus WGCs , plus the PGA he has won more since leaving Titleist

Big fan of Rory but he can't play grinding golf on hard golf courses in my opinion.

Don't know if its a lack of patience, poor game plan or something else but its not the type of exam he is going to pass.

Interesting stat that if the World Ranking points started on 1st Jan then Rory would be 2nd just behind DJ - guess the season is going well so far then for Rory

Smoke and mirrors.

And claiming he is a streaky player sums him up, to be the best you need to be consistent not streaky.

Agreed. Wrong to say he can't play certain courses. The best have always managed to find a way. He doesn't seem to have a plan B and knuckle down and accept +2 on a given day is a decent score. As for the world ranking points raised elsewhere the points system doesn't start on 1st January so its a mute point and masks the fact that McIlroy's win this year was the first since 2016. Granted there have been injuries in there but I don't think he's turned into the consistent and dominant golfer that was expected when he came on the scene and started

Throughout his career he has always been about chasing the birdies and he just doesn’t seem a player who wants to grind - he seems an all or nothing , either a win or a missed cut , he is prob as frustrated as any of us but by god we must all know how annoyingly close the good rounds seem to be and we all know that plenty of times we just give up when playing knowing we aren’t going to win.

He has had a weird couple of years - end of 2016 and beginning of 2017 he looked like he was getting right onto form - then the rib injury and it looked like he didn’t give that anywhere near enough time to heal properly , then gave himself the winter and since then has been playing well , some very good finishes , a win and a handful of top 5’s show he is close to sparking again. You’re right that this just isn’t the type of tournament that Rory will excel at - he just seems to not want to settle for par , he always chases that birdie , it doesn’t seem to be in his make up to be a safe player and it’s no doubt going to cost him over his career but it’s also going to produce some thrilling times.

But it didn’t start on 1st Jan and he won’t be 2nd after this. It’s like saying a team won the second half 2:0 yet they didn’t score in the first half when there opponents netted 5. McGinley isn’t objective when it comes to Rory as he is so 😍.

dont get me wrong, huge Rory fan, on a brighter note, has Mark Roe been benched or even better put out to Grass?
