Random Irritations

Maybe this isn’t quite the right place to post, but as meningitis has been mentioned here, I wanted to share something personal.

Two of my nephews live in North Kent. The younger one attends Queen Elizabeth School, where, very sadly, a pupil recently passed away from the disease. Although she wasn’t in his year, he knew her well, and her death has had a huge impact on him and other students.

My older nephew is at the University of Kent in Canterbury, where another student who died was studying. Thankfully, he wasn’t in the same halls of residence, and neither of them were at the nightclub that’s been mentioned.

They’re both safe, which we’re very grateful for—but it really brings home how close these tragic events can feel, even when they don’t directly affect us. It’s been a worrying and emotional few days.

Take care, everyone.

I hope both your nephews are doing well and finding a way to cope with the sad news of friends passing. My oldest daughter works at Canterbury Christ church and has dealing with all students in her role there. She has said how they are taking it very seriously despite what’s been seen in some news outlets.

According to the info the staff have been given the first case was contracted/passed on in a Canterbury night club. They’re continuing to monitor and check in with people regularly and ensuring any one absent through illness is monitored closely.

The “patriotism” thing, including symbols, got me musing about the different things we do to support various ‘causes.’ Why do we feel the need for outwardly ‘shows’ of support?

Why wear a poppy? A few years back we didn’t get any to sell at the bowls club yet the collection was pretty much the same as previous years. When the Remembrance programme is on the Beeb I always watch it and always stand for the minute’s silence at the end… why?

Here in Spain the flag on the 18th hole is almost always the Spanish flag. Tradition is it’s never laid down on the green, always held amongst the players when putting out.

Me just musing…
It’s an interesting concept but I do think that people outwardly boast (can’t think of a better word) about what they support is often a little self serving. In many cases, not all granted its done for self validation to show others “we’re” good people because we donte to a certain charity or are patriotic etc. IMO it should be enough to know in our own hearts we do these things and not need to show or prove it outwardly.

The Poppy one is a good example and I can’t answer for all as to why they do it some will be genuine others because they’ve been told to and feel they have to, but I personally don’t care if someone wears one or not, I’m not concerned if someone abides by the minutes silence either. It also annoys me when people get overly offended by those that don’t honour these things and they outwardly chastise people for it. As they seem to forget those service personnel that have given their lives in service to the country did so that people have the right to freedom and have freedom of choice to what they do and that includes the right of choosing how they honour remembrance or not.

But then that’s just my musings to. Interesting topic though ☺️

Not been Orderly Sgt yet then? 😎
Thankfully I’m screened from that in my role. It’s reserved for MPGS and RPs now I get left alone to actually run my teams and my lads and not involved in flag bearing and raising garbage 😉.

One of the lads here had to raise the Ensign the other week and another stripey got all worked up as in his mind he wasn’t doing it right or how he likes it (even though he was doing nothing wrong)so I told him you don’t like it do it yourself. He sat back down at his desk and never spoke for the rest of the day. The peace and quiet was lovely 😂

I am not offended if people don’t observe a minutes silence, perhaps they forgot? But when people disrupt such an event or another country’s anthem by booing, that REALLY irritates me.

Re the “I’m not offended…” exactly, it’s about the right to choose. Your second sentence then covers the respect of the right to choose.

Exactly so. I remember John Snow being unjustifiably chastised for not wearing one opresenting the news a few years ago. The British Legion's comment on the matter was that they strongly supported his free choice to wear or not wear a poppy - this freedom is exactly what those we remember died to protect. This has always been their (correct) position.

Poppy police are the worst

If someone doesn’t want to wear a poppy that’s their choice

What I will always think is poor is when people can’t just silent for 1 min to show just a small bit of respect

It’s why sport events mainly football now move to a minutes applause to drown out the inbreds who deliberately cause issues

But as a whole I think 99% respect the Armistice Silence

Exactly. A terrible development from the silences which properly conveyed respect.

Except during The National Anthem?
That seems to be a bit of 'a thing' and has been mentioned here on more than one occasion.

Dunno I find grown men flying a flag for any reason in the name of being patriotic absolutely cringe worthy

Nope it’s still cringe worthy regardless of context. Grown men don’t need to fly flags and outward displays of patriotism regardless of context are equally embarrassing. You don’t need to tell people you’re a patriot , you should know it within yourself if you need to wave a flag your just virtue signalling look at me I’m a knob 😂.

It’s like being a Vegan!! How do you know someone’s a Vegan? They’ll tell you without asking them! Same for Patriots and flag wavers!

But isn't wearing a football shirt pretty much the same thing just on a slightly more local level?

And on a lighter note.....
Arrived in Tenerife Monday evening, Out for a stroll about 19.30 in short sleeves and shirt for a few drinks. Lovely.
Tuesday beautiful.
Wednesday bloody cold as Storm Therese announced her arrival by blowing in. Apparently she's just limbering up and intends to stay until Tuesday next.
We go home Thursday.
Weather back home Sunny and dry!
😢

This is were this Patriotic/Nationalism debate gets daft, imo, the wearing of Football shirts! Golf Clubs with logo’s, certain brand of Car!

Not everything is related to the brand or badge and needs to be taken to such levels as some sort of hidden meaning!

Fly a flag, don’t fly a flag, wear a poppy, don’t wear a poppy, just please don’t insist of telling me why you follow a particular road! I’m not interested! I know what matters to me and how I’ll think of you, regardless of your reasons.

I know that pedestrians have the right of way on Zebra crossings but the number of people I see who just walk out without looking scares me to death..
Had one this morning..I saw them and clocked that they were going to cross probably before they'd even decided to
But they just strolled out without looking.....Just assuming that traffic will see them and stop.
They should...but would you risk it?

Yesterdays really nice day made me realise all the flower pots now need watering and trays under them.

Woke up this morning to the resultant bad back from all the lifting and watering of the pots.
