Random Irritations

I don't think it is preventing hooligans from the Maccabi club travelling that is the driving decision here...more that it is the risk that the presence of supporters of Maccabi might attract other groups (not football) representatives to stage demonstrations (and no doubt attract counter demonstrations) that then might spill over into violence. But to discuss in more detail would no doubt disappear down a political rabbit hole so I'm not going any further with that train of thought.
Understood. But there were plenty of their fans running wild when they played Ajax, but I get your point.

Totally agree.

I don’t see it as any better or worse now than it ever has been. I have worked with some terrible malingerers down the years, including one officer who managed somehow to rack up over three years on the sick before she retired on ill health grounds with less than 25 years in the job. Those close to her knew she was swinging the lead but weak supervision allowed her to get away with it. Her retirement was ultimately as much to do with getting rid of someone who had become seen as too difficult to manage as it was down to her actually being too incapacitated to work.

She was far from alone. A guy I joined with had an appalling sickness record - he genuinely never went a full calendar month without time off somewhere for some minor ailment. Again, weak supervision was the key to allowing him to get away with it.

People exploiting weak management and taking sick leave at the drop of a hat is absolutely nothing new. It’s been happening since I entered the workplace all those years ago, and will always be a problem where there are supervisors and managers who see it as too much of a problem to address.

A lot of it is also down to upbringing, as all things are. My wife and I rarely had days off school with ailments, or anything else. I even went to school the day my dad passed away, so strict was my mum. And we rarely took time off work. As a consequence, my kids both had a near 100% attendance at school and have carried that ethos into their adult lives.

It’s nothing generational, and it’s absolutely wrong to suggest today’s younger generation are any worse than those who preceded them.
There is a bloke (45 ISH) that"works" at the Tesco I was at. He was off on sick more than he was there. He's currently into a 7 week sickness, with staff running a sweep on when he will return. I've got first week of Jan. No chance of him coming back in December it's far too busy. Lol. How can he get away with it?

I am ex military and wife has been local government for years and I can confirm that the military is more lax about the odd day off sick than local government. No back to work interviews, no max days off in a certain period, etc. Just self certification or if you really want to push it, pop to the med centre and get signed off - all on full pay with very little come back.
That never used to be the case during my time in the RN. Although I did leave it in 2002. I remember one time I cracked a couple of ribs and just breathing was painful. The cure, here’s some paracetamol and get back to work as there’s nothing else we can do. Trying to climb up the side of a helicopter was almost impossible. Unless you were almost dying and in hospital the best you could hope for was “light duties” and a simple office job for a week or so.

I'll gladly pass on the Golf Licence if we can introduce a Supermarket Trolley Licence.....
Should have a nice bruise on my leg and another on my left heel - got 2 bad heels now - in the morning....
I've come to the conclusion that 90% of the people who walk this Earth are complete and utter morons......

And those who just drive off leaving their trolley occupying a parking space.
I genuinely don't understand that mentality.
