a friend been put on a performance plan or rather an early version of a formal one. He and his manager agreed that a lot things not working for him is because of his clients changing mind or delaying projects. So the manager wrote it down and cc-ed HR et al. My friend sent the doc for me to review. Reading it as a neutral third party, it reads like my friend's behaviour and lack of motivation is the problem. Told him not to sign and discuss it wtih his manager. Manager says, 'dont worry, we both understand it, and I have your back'. Never met the guy, but seems like a guy with an agenda. or am i over reacting because i overead the paper and I am biased towards my friend.

Whatever is written down wins the day. Verbal assurances mean nothing. I think your instinct is correct on this.

Sounds to me like the manager is covering his own backside and throwing your friend under the bus.
When it all goes belly up the manager will suddenly bring out this letter and your friend has already put himself in the firing line.
Ask your friend or do it yourself if you have the time or inclination to write your own letter and ask the boss to sign that.
Let’s see if he has his back then?

yeah... so i got him to use AI as a company solicitor and draft a response. After a few tries, it was pretty good. Sometimes it is amazing what tech can do. He has now drafted a counter point - which he added soundbites that his manager had said during their call + add context for any of the challenges he is facing. He also did not want to throw the manager completley under the bus, so keeping some powder dry.

He says they have gone quiet. but i guess his manager is running it thru some AI to get another message. Just creates a toxic work place. Shame as he has been there for a while and likes it. but is guess as @Lord Tyrion said, the written word wins, so better be prepared than sorry

Like the time, months after retirement, when I walked into the living room with a cup of tea, slice of toast, sat in my chair, remote in hand and said "I hope Saturday Kitchen hasn't started yet".
My wife replied "I shouldn't think so, it's Thursday".
That seriously freaked me.
Now I have golf Monday, Thursday, Saturday, grandkids school collection Tuesday, Wednesday and if it's none of those it's either Friday or Sunday. If it's Friday I have to sign on for next weeks comp in the clubhouse at 18.30, if it's Sunday it's a chicken roast dinner.
Much less confusing than working all week 👍

A few years back I had 3 consecutive Tuesdays. I'd ask "is it Tuesday", and Mrs H would reply, "not yet."

Thankfully, the bowling season has just about started, which comes with a full diary.
 
Got a business meeting today.
My partner turns up to pick me up and he is dressed in a full suit.
I’m here in jeans trainers and a T shirt.
One of us is going to look stupid when we get there, just hope it’s him.

I have a joke that leaves most people looking blank.
Two hippos basking in the mud. One says "I don't know why but I keep thinking it's Thursday".
