Random Irritations

Getting old. While definitely preferable to the alternative it still sucks. In my 20's and 30's I could play football on Saturday afternoon, go out afterwards and end up in a nightclub until 2am and then on to a house party, get up for Sunday morning football, after two hours sleep, and then go out on the beers all afternoon and still be fine to get up and go to work on Monday morning. Now I'm in my late 40's and if I sleep a bit funny I'm in pain for days.

Getting old starts early. I remember in my mid 30’s struggling to recover from knocks in time for midweek training, whereas in my mid 20’s it would be training on Wednesday and 5-A-side on Thursday prior to playing at the weekend. Once upon a time, 36 holes in a day but I can barely manage 18 holes in a week. Getting old sucks.
 
And don’t forget that your hearing starts to get a bit worse and your eyesight… and I mean it when I said ‘don’t forget’ cos your memory starts getting a bit badderer too. It's all more than a bit annoying

I gave up football when I was 60yrs old, I'm sure a lot of ageing is done in one's head.
 
Yeah, getting old.
I was playing golf with one of our members grandson. He said to me, " I really like playing golf with the older guys, they tell some great stories, trouble is, they either can't see very well, can't hear very well, and can't remember their scores".
He's a lovely lad (15) and a very good golfer and a joy to play golf with! 😁

Quite…how did I do it. Friendly workmates 9/10 a-side Tuesday; club training Wednesday and playing Saturday pm after golf in the morning; league 5-a-side Sunday am; golf pm.

These days I’ve got to take care going downstairs to make my Mrs her wake-up coffee first thing as the joints and muscles struggle to get going. Ah well…at least I’ve got my health (…touching wood).

I was only talking last week with a mate I used to ski with in my 20’s. I reminded him of the nights we used to be on a dance floor in a club at 3am, still wearing our ski boots, very much the worse for wear.

We’d still be on the first ski lift at 8.30am.
 
bloody united... blew all my lunch money to get to Old Trafford... because we cant lose a home match against Bournemouth..

what a lousy game.. none of them turned up and played like Amateurs. the 0-3 scoreline could have been 0-6

Late 40's getting old? Boy, are you in for a surprise!
 
A lot of getting old is in the mind. OK, your body starts to get old, but it's what you think about it that matters. In my head I'm not 64. And I can't do all the things I used to but I refuse to put myself in that "getting old" mindset as that is the start of a slippery slope.

In my mind I'm still in my twenties, unfortunately my body isn't. Took my younger boy to football training one day and they were messing about in the long jump pit before it started. Told them I'd show them how it was done. I sprinted towards the pit and hit the take off board perfectly. Unfortunately at the exact moment my foot hit the board my hamstring went twang and I was left in a heap on the floor. Cue much laughter from a bunch of 11 year olds. So, while the mind is still willing, the body is not.
 
We all get older at the same rate.
I've always been in touch with my ageing not at odds with it.
Really enjoyed the football and the boozing, but wound it down necessarily as time went on.
Maybe having two older brothers has helped. I'll always be the young one.

I was playing 5-a-side to my mid forties but gave it up when my cruciate ligament snapped at the end of a game. At that point I decided not to pursue that particular career. But I still try to be as daft as I can and will do for as long as I can.

I tell this story of my 20s a lot to younger people...
Started work at 7am, worked until 5 and then drove to Reading Uni to meet up with a amate.
We then went to a Motorhead gig, got roped into helping to load the lorry afterwards, had a quick chat with Lemmy and then back to my mate's house
Got there at 4am..I had to leave at 6 to get back to work for 7 so we just chatted and drank coffee
Got to work, worked till 5, got on a train to London for the Motorhead gig at Hammersmith.
After that got back home about 12.30, by the time I crashed it was 2, 4 hours kip and I'm up for work again.
If I tried that now I think I'd die somewhere on the train to London..... :ROFLMAO:

Depends on injuries to a degree. I’d love to believe that my 45 year old body is capable of my 21 year old deeds but no amount of positive thinking is going to undo 14 knee operations.

At 20 years old I was playing 11 games of football a week (plus two training sessions). I think that might have something to do with subsequent reprecussions. I had to stop playing 10 years ago or I wouldn’t be able to walk now.

Just wait till your early 60s. I can hardly get down the stairs in the morning. The number of times i've had to cancel golf this year because of my knees doesn't bear thinking about.

I think this sort of thing could be a future time bomb.
Kids are doing so much sport - not necessarily a bad thing - and picking up so many injuries, having operations aplenty and potentially doing long term damage..
I do wonder how may are going to have to stop by the time they're 30 for fear of ending upmin a wheel chair before they're 40..
A bit alarmist, I know, but when I was a kid hardly anyone had sports injury operations.
Kids and parents I speak to these days make it sound commonplace.
 
If I look at all the missed work days from the young ppl I work with, supposedly due to minor aliments etc, I’d wager none will reach the 50 millstone without a full time carer and wheelchair :rolleyes:
 
If I had a pound for everyone who said ''I wish I'd started sooner'', I'd be a richer man.

They start golf as a school kid, then they discover football/rugby etc, girls and beer.
3 kids, 2 knackered knees and 30 years later, they give up football/rugby etc and ''settle'' for golf
