Random Irritations

HMRC again. It looks like the tax is finally sorted for the wife's new job. Fingers crossed

However they still (incorrectly) believe my wife owes over £1000 in tax for one year (a year she didn't earn enough to pay tax)

Have disputed this countless times (even tho can't get through to them)

Nice debt collection letter arrived today

Do kindly take a run and jump

Well the debt collection people are so much easier to deal with than HMRC, I appreciate HMRC serves a lot more people

But their open 8-8 instead of 8-6 and open weekends so my wife easily spoke to them

Where as we still haven't had a reply from HMRC who just instead passed the debt on even tho we had challenged it

Bit extreme but there you go

The tradies charging for quotes and the not turning up is linked along with the majority of the decent ones having full diaries, you have to be very careful choosing a tradesman these days, the majority of good ones pick and choice their jobs and customers, many choosing to only work for people they have worked for before or on recommendation, there are a lot of unscrupulous people about and the relationship works both ways, and tradespeople have to limit the risk of being ripped off also, they refer to a charge for quotations to put the customer off, a polite way of saying they donKt want the job, same as when they don’t turn up, that has been my experience anyway.

The tradesmen that I don't understand are the ones that come out to have a look at the job but then never get back with a quote. If they don't want the job then why bother wasting their time coming out to have a look?

Well you were wrong. Received a reply this morning and much quicker than their promised 7 to 10 days for a reply.....

Although I won't be holding my breath as they said the same last time I informed them what the problem was.

Outfox the Market are exceeding even my expectations of them. This morning I received an email with a 2nd demand for payment and threatening me with a debt collection agency if I don't pay.

Guilt tripping and stealth tips..

Stopped for posh Breakfast on my own at hotel in London.. when the bill arrived
1) they added £1 for the charity of their choice
2) added 12.5% ‘discretionary’ service charge for brining me a coffee and toast

Sure i could ask for it to be taken off, but how many ask for it

Im a firm believer in 10% tipping. Even for take aways

However I won't be forced to.

I dont do cash much , but I keep some cash just for tips as I know it goes to the person and not to the place. As they did the service

I ask for it to be removed every time. I decide if the service warrants a tip, not them.

I wonder if they put it on and hope people don’t notice and then leave an additional tip?

I don’t mind 12.5% as long as it goes to the server and I’ve had good service (exception to this is if they are young kids then I always tip well even if they bungled it a bit, this is because my young son is at Uni in Farnham and the amount of well to do Surreyites that do not tip is unbelievable!)

Hmm, I wonder whether it's declared on their tax returns.
