Random Irritations

The sychophantic gushing over Elton John's set at Glastonbury.
Recorded it and just watched it.
Come on, the guy just can't sing any more.

(Saw him at Watford football ground many years ago and it was a fantastic show).

It was entertaining, but his singing was so bad I laughed out loud more than once.

Just a little bit pathetic and condescending.

Would you be happy with that behaviour from a team you were playing for?
I wouldn't.
I'd sooner lose with honour than win with shame.
Would I be happy if my team played within the rules? Yes.

I don't 'do' cricket... what's the closest golfing analogy to what happened at the weekend at the ashes? (I assume it'd have to be matchplay scenario)

are any of these close: Taking a 3" tap-in away before its conceded? Giving 2 footers all day then asking for a 1ft to be holed? Pulling them up for teeing in front of markers on 18th hole when its been happening all day?

I really have no idea

I am not sure of a golfing one where something is within the rules but frowned upon. In football I suppose you could liken it to the opposition kicking the ball out because your player is injured and then you scoring off the resulting throw in rather than returning it to the opposition. Perfectly legal (or it used to be, not sure now) but very much poor sportsmanship.

The real question are we Brits the only nation that really worries about "honour" and "upholding" the game and actually why we don't win as much because we spend too much time being polite we are simply not ruthless enough anymore

The Bairstow dismissal was the rough equivalent of standing watching your opponent tee off then telling them they were 6 inches in front of the tee marker and calling a penalty. Within the rules and they should have known better, but you could have pointed it out before screwing them over.

We should really take this over to the cricket thread but I'll reply here (we will irritate non cricket fans for hogging this thread). I would say it is not giving a 6" putt, pro level, in matchplay when you have been giving them all day. The person picks up, the other player states they didn't give it when everyone really knows it is dead. They didn't pick up on a 2ft putt or a 1ft putt, it was 6". That is the level imo.

You're kidding. We're no more honourable than anyone else. We just like to trot it out when we lose.

Saw the news that energy prices are going to go up in Winter... No shot sherlock.. Jut like clockwork, prices go up when you need more gas and they have 'dropped' when we dont need heating..

Glad I fixed that gas at 7.5p a kw when it was on offer last week .

I think the fans like to think their team is honourable until there not then it's like "it's within the rules" like diving in football. It's crept in to awful levels that fans "I don't want to see that at my club" when it actually happens "well If you put your leg out your asking to give away a pen"
