Random Irritations

It’s a slippery path though isn’t it? Are we to expect the ethnicity to always be released if the suspect is white, and therefore not released if not white?

I know why it was released straight away, I just think it is going to cause issues at some future point.
Not sure how saying what ethnicity someone is will prejudice a trial?

Hence why I think a line needs to be drawn in the sand

The police etc need to inform the public that someone ethnicity won’t be released until someone is charged

Disagree.

The Police should be reporting facts. If there's nothing to hide, why wouldn't they report facts? A persons age, height, sex, build and colour is a fact. Not revealing information just leads to a grey era where mistrust forms and fake news can be spread by both sides.

Using your logic, if someone had committed a serious crime and went on the run. You'd not want an accurate discription released until they were charged?

Someone’s ethnic background etc shouldn’t be relevant

People shouldn’t need to know what their skin colour etc is but we know why they want to know it

There are certain people that are looking to stir up racial hatred and use these type of events to fuel - they don’t care about the harm that’s been caused , they just need to find a way to trigger people

Someone going on the run is a little different

It won't

Just certain people pushing certain agendas like to claim this is because of certain races .. so had to release it to stop that straight away

Failure to share basic facts about the Southport killer led to "dangerous fictions" which helped spark rioting, an independent watchdog has said.

Jonathan Hall KC, the UK's independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, said it would have been "far better" for the authorities to share more accurate detail on the arrest of Axel Rudakubana on 29 July last year.

Rudakubana, who was 17 at the time, walked into the Hart Space dance studio and attacked children at a Taylor Swift themed half-term event.

Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine; Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven and six-year-old Bebe King were killed while nine other children and two adults were injured.

Mr Hall said the "ineffectual near silence" from police, prosecutors and the government after the attacks led to disinformation that sparked widespread rioting in the days after the attack.

Government and law enforcement officials including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer have said they had to keep information back to avoid prejudicing any potential trial for Rudakubana.

There you have it. In simple terms the government, CPS and the local Police messed up and caused the riots by failing to release 'basic' facts.

I don’t think anything about someone’s ethnicity should be released

The problem is there are those in society that are more than ok to spread fake news in the hope that it creates the hatred they desire

It shouldn’t be required to release it but I can see why they did on this occasion

Never have I heard, "white man" so frequently in news reports.

For some, that news was disappointing, for others, suprise and relief.

Prejudice is to be found on both sides of the street.

The riots were caused by Far right racist bigots who were looking for anything to be able to attack a mosques etc - a consequence of the growing rise in far right hatred within the uk

That under current within a lot of areas is just waiting for the next tragic event to be able to act out on that hatred

In Southport his name was leaked etc before and straight away the fake news about him being a Muslim and an immigrant was all over social media

The police can release all the details and people will still react

I know exactly why they did it this case, and fully support the reason. My question is why the police (in general) keep basic facts ‘secret’ as not to prejudice the case?

And their failure to release details let the far right morons jump on it and turn into something it wasn't

Those poor kids names used as a reason to promote hate and misinformation

Not true at all.

They were caused by people rightly feeling angry at a shocking attack and the authorities keeping quiet, as highlighted by an independent review.
It's your opinion they were caused by the far right which has been proven to be incorrect.

So why did they attack a mosque ?

It was fuelled by far right on social media and spreading false information that the offender was a Muslim and an immigrant

Where do you find two sides to facts?

I'm afraid you have missed "narrow minded " from this

Don't get me wrong I'm sure there was a small minority of far right idiots there but how many mosques were actually attacked? The attacks on hotels were more dangerous and far more concerning IMO.

The government could've nipped it in the bud but they did nothing, which is highlighted in the review. Thankfully it looks like they've learnt from the mistakes.

They could have. However these incidents are learning curves. There isn't a set manual

People demand to know stuff they frankly have no business knowing

Plus even when the facts are presented to people they believe Karen on FB about putting bleach up their noses to stop COVID

Saw this

"There is an easy answer…the public should never take the law into its own hands, regardless of circumstances.

If a Muslim commits a crime, attacking a mosque doesn’t help. If a catholic commits a crime, attacking a church doesn’t help. If a father commits a crime, attacking other men who happen to have children doesn’t help.

As with some people turning BLM protests into an excuse to loot, these incidents are just people using external situations to themselves commit crime, usually underpinned by their own prejudices and frustrations.

If you commit a crime, don’t blame the Police’s comms team."

The police revealed information early to try and stem the same online spread of disinformation and speculation seen after Southport, which caused so many problems in the days which followed.

Much like the spread of disinformation and speculation seen here during the last 24 hours.

Please keep that in mind.
