Random Irritations

People complaining that people don’t organise meets anymore.
Surely if one was that bothered, one could organise a meet.
There are a number of clear reasons why people don’t want to arrange meets or why any trip is being arranged away from the forum now

And that’s a random irritation because many people on here have met good friends through this forum

Honestly I think we've had just as many new posters come in over the last four years who have added quality. Like most things the forum is always evolving. 👍🏻
I joined up for golf related stuff. Most of the active threads seem to be non golf related.

Made some great friends on here and had some great times at great venues. And it’s a shame that people are missing out on making new friends too. A cynic might say that those long standing members who prefer a closed shop are just as much to blame.

I imagine hosting people you don’t know is a risk. If they turn out to idiots it’s you who will be judged by your club.

I don’t think I have ever seen anyone even suggest or want the forum to be a closed shop

Far from it - if anything the forum used to be wide open for many and it was better that way

A number have alluded to the fact that losing posters is better for them

See the highlighted bit.

Personally, I think a lot of people don’t want the hassle of arranging meets. I’m sure any number of us that have arranged meets have had the odd no show but a club has insisted the meal is still paid for. Of the 30+ meets I’ve arranged down the years I’ve never had a club complain about behaviour, although socks has been raised a few times :ROFLMAO:. Equally, sometimes people just want a small group of long time friends on a trip - my last Woodhall trip was 4 people. I get that sometimes people want a quiet trip.

I know we’ve had the discussion before Phil but I don’t subscribe to your view that the forum is a worse place now than it was. New member numbers joining over the winter has been strong. The number of meets arranged, as I said earlier after trawling through the section, is also comparable. Once upon a time the forum could be a very toxic place, more like the Wild West at times, but thankfully it’s calmer now. And I’ve had a few PM’s saying how much better the place is now. Some members have drifted away, just like in real life when friends give up golf or move clubs. And as we discussed previously, some of those you miss I don’t but, equally, there’ll be people I miss you don’t. That doesn’t make me right or wrong nor you. And some members, knowing the rules, have chosen to be foolish.

The forum will continue to evolve, grow, shrink and grow again. That’s life.

If people have been on here for a while it does not take long to work out people from their posts on here. Also at times judgement can be wrong for people.

Reading posts from people on here who are always looking for arguments, aggressive with other members are people who would not be considered by the majority.

Whilst there are fewer meets now I sometimes look at the potential organiser and am almost certain they will get off the ground. Having organised meets for away days at my own Club it is difficult enough. Phil the F summed it up recently explaining what was required.

If someone organises a meet on here I assume it is open to everyone? Or are there restrictions?

It's entirely up to the organiser. I can't remember anyone restricting people however, other than by simple numbers, ie an organiser can only get 3 slots and it's first come first served.

I've also been to multiple meets and never had anything but a good time, never met someone who behaved poorly on the day.

You know what they say, if you can't see the idiot in the group, then it must be................... ;)

Survivorship. Have you considered that many “leavers” are unable to PM you any opinion either by choice or force? You’re only looking at vocal minority that remains.

This doesn’t need a PM to say. As a 95% reader 5% poster here for many years the quality of this community has declined. Once it was a golf fellowship that you might find at any golf club, now it’s barely meeting the bar of an unruly primary school.

All noise, no signal. That’s my irritation and on that thought, I’m done.

I think a lot of people who say the forum has got worse are just dismayed that a younger crowd joins and momentum shifts towards the more modern golfer who's actually aware of social issues and has diluted the typical old boy's club. Same thing that's (hopefully) happening in golf clubs across the country.

Here we go again. It's an online forum. It's no big deal really in the big scheme of things. If it's rubbish in your opinion then don't bother with it.

Or alternatively keep bothering and keep telling us all how great it used to be.
Lot's of people like to think the old days were great and things have got worse, and conveniently forget the bad things that used to happen

Those who keep saying how bad it is. How many more meets there were point out they still meet up, and talk to said members who have left. So the forum brought them together which is good and they still talk and meet up. Surely that's a good thing?

Plenty of banned or former members on the help for heros list so can't be wanting to avoid the forum that much. Maybe they just found better things to do with their life's.. hopefully I'll find similar when my ban comes.
