After a hundred or so days of waiting I received the letter this morning about the allocation of school for my 11yr old son.

Against all the odds my son made it into Reading Boys Grammar, he took the entrance exam back in November with 600 boys vying for a 100 places.

I'm can hardly type through the tears in my eyes, to say I'm happy (and relieved) is a massive understatement.

I never had this opportunity myself so for it to work out for my son is amazing, I am so proud of him.

Congrats sawtooth, and to your son. Word of warning. I made it into ours years ago, and I feel it wasn't for me. Then the exam was done on Maths and English, I'd imagine it's more wide ranging now, and all I can out with was. yup, Maths and English. Rugby playing hell hole too. Although they do golf now I'm told, sob.
Anyhoo, great result mate!

Well done. Didn't know there still was a grammar school in Reading. I went to grammar school in Henley, but it turned into a sixth form college.

Congrats sawtooth/sawtooth jnr. I vaguely remember the day I passed my 11+ to get into my local grammar. Glad I got in. School (particularly 6th form) was the best years of my life!

Congrats to you both.

I passed an entrance exam when I was 11. It gained me entrance to a very good private school. It had everything, superb facilities, excellent academic standards - I never fitted in.

Unless you come from money and a nice area, I'd advise 'normal' people to steer clear of such establishments.

Cheers all, I've calmed down a bit now but can still hardly believe it.

Its a state run school but with a very good reputation, the entrance exam is the only entry criteria so does not really mean that you need money, just ability. Admittedly those with money would have paid for private tutouring from an early age, whereas in our case my son had.....me.

There are only a few things in life more important than golf, and now I will go out to play with a spring in my step.

I wonder if this state of euphoria makes for better golf?

Its simply called Reading Boys but its a grammar of sorts.

Its on a road near a hospital so does that mean right next door to you Homer?

BTW how did your eye appt go and did you manage to squeeze a game in today? ;)

I know the one. Its directly across from the hospital on Erleigh Road. Can't say about the teaching but their sporting facilities are excellent. Had a diabetic eye test this morning where they put drops in your eyes to enlarge the pupil. Very strange. Went up the club after lunch and went out. Not fully recovered and in the sun it was an unusual sensation. Played on my own and the first nine was adequate. Hit it OK without scoring well. Met two mates on the 10th tee and we all had a horror back nine. Still finding it hard to hit and trust the swing and still can't putt to save my life. I've seen 28 handicap beginners with better short games.

Feck me I got it wrong again its simply called Reading School but you got it anyway.

Must get out for a game this year at the "new" Ascot.
