Professional Golf

A lot of work is done. But do you genuinely believe that they go out into every inch of rough and look for buried golf balls!?
Thought the lawnmowers would turn them over really. Maybe not if it's particularly deep. In that example with AK it didn't look like the deepest rough I've ever seen.

Maybe it’s just me but I really can’t stand the over hype of The Players , it’s nearly as unbearable as Monty at Augusta

And the course is very much overrated

The event is on the same level as the PGA at Wentworth
I really like the Players, but you're right, the 'fifth major' nonsense has got really out of hand this year. I didn't mind it when people kind of affectionately called it the '5th major' as a nickname. Now you've got media outlets left right and centre asking "should it be the 5th major??" and even asking the golfers in their interviews! Answer is no, shut up.

As Lord Tyrion said, if the grass in the rough is higher than the ball, then the blades of the mower are not reaching the ball.

I don't imagine they cut the rough to fairway level weeks or months before the event, and then let it grow, whilst allowing nobody to play the course so that no new balls are gobbled up by the new rough.

It's all about 'content' and filling time. Same as football pundits repeating the same stuff.

I’d say the players is the best of the non-majors but it’s not an event I’m counting down the days to during the sparse winter months, that’s reserved for the masters.

However, I do enjoy watching it. Main reasons for that are the time it’s on, it’s a good watch in the evenings and even in bed if I’m struggling! And then it’s the finishing 2-3 holes, so many times there’s still everything to play for going into those holes, which just adds to the drama and suspense. There aren’t many events where the leader can be stood on the last tee with a couple of shots lead, and it’s still not a done deal.

Love The Players. I think the course is stunning. As you say it's not over till it's over, given the finishing holes. If I was to rank tournaments outwith the Ryder Cup I'd prob go.
1. The Open
2. Masters
3. The Players
4. US Open (occasionally would rank 3 depending on the course)
5. US PGA

That does appear to answer the depth of field issue though; seems they have realised that small no-cut fields are not the way to go.

Quite right too. Aside from the greater opportunities for more players this brings, a big name or two close to the cut line adds interest and drama, particularly to the 2nd day of any tournament, as does a previously unheralded name having a magical week and fighting out with the big dogs - in fact that's some of the greatest interest you can get; someone who has a fairly tenuous pro career fighting for a genuinely life-changing opportunity with all the pressure that brings is more interesting than only having big names adding a fraction more wealth to their already huge wealth. It's why I can remember Malnati winning the Valspar in 2024 but can't remember anything about Hovland and Thomas battling it out in 2025 (had to look up that result)...
The two level thing might be quite interesting. Say players in the A stream have 3 events, and B stream have three events. The bottom x (20 maybe?) from A drop down to B, and top x from B move up to A, for the next n events.

The pundits and media would no doubt love all the faux jeopardy - as it stands yyyy is in the bottom 20, he's just made a birdie and moves up etc.

Didn’t realise that LIV were having an event going up against The Players - interesting choice
Obviously up to you how you interpret 'going up against'.
For me, different timezone, different continent - so it isn't. Watched a bit of one this morning , and can watch a bit if the other this evening. No bother.

Anyhow, it's how you can tell the Players isn't a major 😉

I'm sure it's coincidental - but this guy raises an interesting point. At a normal golf tournament the players spend a lot of time warming up before heading out on the course, whereas at TGL they probably don't have time to go through the same routine, plus, they are stood around an awful lot waiting to take a shot - which then might be a driver at full hammer.

Anyway, tough blow for Colin - he was playing some good stuff.

😂

Think the account itself and the replies to it sum it up

They are professional athletes they warm up before any time they are playing or hitting a ball including practise sessions

And then when having coaching sessions they maybe standing around etc

Even during tournaments they are standing around at times

In a normal round of golf, it normally takes about 6 hours. There is a lot of standing around and waiting, I suspect much more than in TGL?

At TGL, why would they not have the time to warm up?

In a normal round of golf you are walking about 5 miles or so. The body is moving, almost continually in some form or other.

I know they do warm up at TGL - but are they going through the same process as they would at a tour event?
