Thought the lawnmowers would turn them over really. Maybe not if it's particularly deep. In that example with AK it didn't look like the deepest rough I've ever seen.

It's rough, the lawnmowers are barely touching it. If it is thick grass and it's buried, it's staying hidden.

Maybe it’s just me but I really can’t stand the over hype of The Players , it’s nearly as unbearable as Monty at Augusta
And the course is very much overrated

I really like the Players, but you're right, the 'fifth major' nonsense has got really out of hand this year. I didn't mind it when people kind of affectionately called it the '5th major' as a nickname. Now you've got media outlets left right and centre asking "should it be the 5th major??" and even asking the golfers in their interviews! Answer is no, shut up.

As Lord Tyrion said, if the grass in the rough is higher than the ball, then the blades of the mower are not reaching the ball.
I don't imagine they cut the rough to fairway level weeks or months before the event, and then let it grow, whilst allowing nobody to play the course so that no new balls are gobbled up by the new rough.
It's all about 'content' and filling time.
