Professional Golf

Superb exhibition of straight driving and holing out from Bridgeman.

I think he found every fairway on the back 9, with the chasing pack breathing down his neck, and he wasn't phased by Rory bombing it miles past him. It just made life much easier for himself, he didn't have to force it.

And then, when he started doing an Orikoru and leaving all his putts 3 feet short (sorry 😆), he was very solid under pressure. He confidently rattled the short ones into the back of the cup on 17 and 18, no dribbling up to the hole. Well played.

I didn't watch much of this tournament, but Rory looked good yesterday. Flushing it and also chipping / putting well.

I was pulling for Rory, but you have to give Bridgeman credit. I didn't realize he is from my birth state of South Carolina. I was so impressed with his putting on Saturday. It's so hard to win on the PGA Tour. While his Sunday round wasn't great, he did just enough to get his first win. It will be interesting to see if he maintains this level of play through the season. While I don't dislike him, I was glad to see Scheffler show he is human. He will probably win several events this year as he really doesn't have any weaknesses.

Rory has enough money, has enough trophies at home. This was a breakthrough win for Bridgeman, always good to see. Had Rory caught him from so far behind Bridgeman might have been scarred from that. I never like to see that, it's tough enough for these guys.

Always nice to see the emotion he had afterwards, showed how much it actually meant for him.

When he left that putt well short, and you heard the groans from the crowd, the camera panned to McIlroy. The look on his face, it almost looked like he really felt for him. And that he'd almost rather Bridgeman made the next winning putt rather than missing and Rory getting into a playoff. As you said, he has so much money and trophies, you'd think if there was any competition he would be happy enough missing out narrowly, in that moment it would be that one.

He seemed pretty interested in how much money he was getting for holing his putt on the last tbf…

I think Rory has the money and the trophies so is in the position his real interest is winning the Majors.
He will be happy he is playing well and will be looking at his schedule and his game and trying to get that right to give him his best chance going into the Masters.

I think it’s prob best to look at the whole interview that he gave as opposed to a snippet which is clearly a bit of an attempt at humour

He was very gracious towards the winner and spoke very highly of him and the way he played

Those little snippets clearly being shown for a reason
An interview overall can still be gracious toward the winner and speaking highly of the achievement whilst still having crass moments in.

I’ve see the whole interview and it was perfectly fine. But that moment in it was uncalled for and came across poorly and just puts a slight tarnish on it, in my opinion only of course.

It’s just an attempt at a a bit humour hence the laughing - I guess when it comes to someone in the limelight like that every single thing is scrutinised and then posted up for ridicule

He was being factual as well - the putt did earn him more money

Humour can still be poorly timed, crass and uncalled for especially when someone has been so outspoken about playing purely for money!

It doesn’t matter what Rory says you always defend him to the hilt. I’m not here to argue merely posting my opinion on what he said in that moment was uncalled for despite the rest of the interview being balanced. It’s the reason these snippets get called out! I’ve said my piece nothing more to add to it.

I find it amusing that people will still look for a sigle sentence within a 5 minute interview to see how they can ctiticise someone. Even a golfer, who really has no power in the world beyond entertainment.

I wouldn't have seen that as crass if any golfer had said it. It is simply a true statment, and it was clearly a light hearted answer. As for the money itself, I've no idea what McIlroy does with all his money. But perhaps a big chunk of that extra money will find its way to charity. If he had said "ohhh, it made me a few hundred thousand extra, so I'll be able to blow it on more holidays and mansions", then I would probably class that as crass. If he was doing a Harry Enfield and telling us all he is significantly richer than us, that would be crass. But I'm pretty certain that was not the message he was trying to convey. Although perhaps it came across that way to anyone looking to be offended

I’m not offended nor am I looking to be offended so that’s a weird comment.

I merely think it’s best for these guys to discuss the golf and leave their money out of it. On that note I’ve nothing left to add because always anyone here that mentions anything towards Rory except some for something crawling up his back side gets vilified!

i think you would also need to take into account which tees they use. ive been to scottish opens and the opens on the first few days when they were nowhere near the back tees, which carry a far higher rating. one Carnoustie open they didn't play the very back tees on some holls until the Sunday

It would be interesting to go back to the pre-Tiger days and see what the interviews were like then. Pretty confident they wouldn’t contain some of the daft questions that get asked now, such as the one being discussed above.

I’m watching the final round from last year’s masters at the moment, and Rory has just been asked ‘what would it mean for you to complete the grand slam?’. What do you think it would mean? What do you expect him to say. Do you think the viewing public don’t already know?

What doesn’t help right now also is the state of Tour golf

You have two “sides” going at each other and looking for anything to use as some sort of one up point

No problem. To clarify, my post was a direct reply to yours just as you happened to be the guy that made a comment at the time, but it was more of a general view / frustration I have. So, I don't necessarily believe YOU are the one that is looking to be offended, but it is more related to the people that compile the memes and continually throw negative comments around social media any chance they get regarding McIlroy, even for the most trivial of things he may have said or done. Hence when I see a tweet that has clearly extracted a few seconds from a much larger interview, I can already see the agenda that the creator is intending to push. And they know it will get hits.

I personally wasn't crawling up his backside by simply suggesting I don't think he meant anything crass about what he said. And I am unashemedly a fan of Rory McIlroy, like many others globally. His ability is key to that, and his presence on the leaderboard at the weekend was the only reason I watched the event on Sunday myself. For me, however, it may go a bit further than that, because he is from 10 minutes down the road from my hometown. His coach Michael Bannon was the club pro at my hometown club, where I started playing golf (and was still there before I left for England). My grandparents would frequently watch Rory on the practice ground outside, while they had their coffees in the bar during the off season, before Michael went across the pond to work full time alonside McIlroy a few years ago. I've never met McIlroy, don't know him, but I guess it is that sense of naturally supporting the local lad that done well. I know there are many back home that are immensely proud of producing a golfing icon from our little corner of the world, for what he has done on the golf course, but also that he has become a person where people are genuinely interested in his opinion. He hasn't become another generic sporting person, that gives stock answers to everything.

I don't chip in to every Rory debate on this thread, very few in fact, but I will from time to time voice my opinion when others start one. And I'm not always "pro McIlroy", in the sense that I have been critical in the past about his choice of caddy. That being said, I don't really care too much about that anymore. Once he won the Masters, I think he has hit the pinnacle, and anything else is just a bonus. It is not like he can challenge Jack Nicklaus's major record unless something crazy happens with his form, and Scheffler suddenly hits a downward spiral.
