Professional Golf

They'd prefer to win a major, I think that's obvious.
Yes obviously they would but there is a lot of prestige attached to it and normally it sets the winner up for a good season.
The PGA is only important as it’s major, take that away and I think the players would be a bigger competition

I'd love to see how you substantiate that argument Orikuru.

It's a PGAT event, ergo excludes some of the best players in the world, has very little opportunities of alternative qualification, and the whole event revolves around a par 3 hole.

It's the strongest event that the PGAT put out in terms of field strength, but it is nowhere near good enough to be considered a major.
PGA Bad
LIV Good

We got it Mel 👍

Why are people overthinking this? Calling it the 5th Major is just a nickname, like when you call something the 8th wonder of the world or say somebody has a sixth sense. It doesn't mean anything. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Unfortunately nowadays everything and everybody has to have a label, just seems to be some kind of fad. Just like everyone needs to know who is the best ever at something. Most labels are pointless.

If the Players had a rota of venues, would it be regarded as highly?
Perhaps not. Maybe it is liked in the same way as many like The Masters, because it is the same course each year?

That can be a strength but also a weakness. The Masters has many multi time winners because it suits their game. Held at another course, maybe they would have fewer majors?

I don't mind the party hole or obnoxious "fans". It's a unique event held once a year.

I don't think it's a cracking course though. Actually it's quite bland apart from a couple of risk/reward holes, and the tee shot on the 18th is no longer dangerous because the players can all bomb it past the water these days. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but this course is all fake lashes, collagen and silicone, it's no natural beauty.
I don't mind it either. I think it's great as a once a year event. It's a bit of fun and shouldn't be taken too seriously. Id imagine a lot of locals are enjoying it after all they have had to put up with recently in that area.
Would love to experience it just to see what it's like on the 16th. Am sure me n mates would have a ball.
Great to see Fitz showing a bit of form and Dahmen pitching in on 16 was quality.. Bonus is he didn't get his top off. Lol.

Always said the Brooks Koepka was over rated :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

P Reed on the other hand looks like he is cruising at the top of the leaderboard every week in 2nd gear

I know he still has to produce the goods but also the fields I don’t think are the best in the world and so if he is playing well, he will always be up there

I have asked this before, and the usual answer is "History" but what do you think are the criteria for a Major? I can't see how any of them are different from every other event - virtually the same field, same format, so what makes them a Major?
The 2 opens are notably different, in how to qualify.
The 4 events are not run by a tour, which makes them different.
Mostly it's a media thing, built around comments from popular/influential players back in the day.
IMO.

Well

The course set it up is different , even when it’s on a course that holds tour events - when it comes to a major being held there the set it far more difficult

The majors have all the best players in the world from all the tours

In many tour events there will be playars missing from the top 100

And yes history of the event and past icons deeming them to be the major

To be fair, I think it was more in relation top your original post 👇, which you have since tried to clarify.

I don't think it's a question anymore, people have generally just decided that it is. It's usually a better watch than the PGA Championship as well.

Perhaps it would be worth a poll. Personally I would have thought those calling it that would be a small minority, but we all operate in different circles.

Mel's style can IMO sometimes cloud the message - I think he was highlighting that the narrative around the term is pushed by an organisation and it's media partners every year. There is no right or wrong, and some people are more susceptible to that kind of marketing/advertising than others.

There is no doubting that it is an event with a strong field, and good recognition for winning it. The course will typically split opinion.

And often by players who haven't won any of the four majors!

For me it depends on the context.
As a tour event, better to stay on the one course.
If they were going to open up the field and push the "major" line further, then personally it would be better to go to a rota. But then I think all majors should have a rota (lights touchpaper and runs for cover ;))
