Poults and RC qualification

Tis worth bearing in mind that for all the comments about it being difficult to fulfill the number of events on each tour that both Justin Rose and Rory were playing in the Frys.com Open the weekend just gone. Was that really necessary? Particularly as Rory apparently wont play enough events to qualify for the finals without special dispensation.

Both played in the "Turkish Airlines World Golf Final" 3 years ago. Since this was a non-sanctioned event (taking place at the same date as the frys.com open, a sanctioned event) they needed the PGA's permission to play, which was only given under the condition that they play the frys.com at least once on the three years following the event.

Is that also why Tiger was committed to play as well prior to having back surgery (again)?

Exactly. He'll probably have to play there some time in the future, since I can't imagine the others (7 players besides woods in total, including Rory & Poults) would find it too funny if Tiger would get an exemption.

Seeing as it's no longer the frys.com event (they are dropping the sponsorship), wonder if there is any fine print that could have gotten them out of playing next year.

Next year doesn't matter. This year was year number three after the Turkish Airline event, so they had to play this year in order to fulfill their part of the agreement.

Plus I doubt the sponsor of the event really matters, since it was the PGA who made them play, not frys.com, as I understood it.

Exactly. Said it before and I'll say it again but unless he has a dramatic improvement in form he should not be on the team in a playing capacity. Make him a vice captain if anything. He was poor at Gleneagles, a disaster with Gallagher trying to mentor the rookie and he was being carried by Rory in the 4balls. There's a lot of rose tinted reminiscing saying he changed the match with a chip in, but that was all he did in between spraying it everywhere with his drives.

Part of the value of him in the Ryder Cup was the fear he instilled in the opposition, he was already half way to winning before he hit a ball as his reputation proceeded him. Nowadays the way he's playing no US player will fear him, in fact they will want to play him. Yes he was Mr Ryder Cup, but move on, Bruce Forsyth was Mr Entertainment, and he'd probably not be top of anyones list as the best entertainer nowadays. We have experience in people like Stenson, Rose and Rory who can play that role. And there are a number of very exciting youngsters coming through who should be given the chance.

That chip in was a pivotal moment during that match - it was all flat for Europe , the US were getting a little bit of a foothold in the match and a little spark was needed and the chip and the putt on the next green was exactly that.

McIlroy even stated himself it gave him the perfect tonic to spark again to gain a very good half which just kept the momentum going - McGinley also stated how much of an influence he is behind the scenes as well

It was a poor RC for Poulter - he played 3 matches and got two halves

He will be in the mix up for the next one - he is the exact sort of person the European team need both on and off the course - he gives the team that Seve fighting spirit and this year he has played some good golf - just struggled to get over the line whilst he has focused on the Masters

He will be in the RC baring injury and will once again play a role in the team and the US won't want him at the RC

I would love to see him qualify by right but I don't think he will. Depending on the form nearer the time it could be that he doesn't even get a captains pick. Would definitely have him in the team room but you can't live off past glories and he seemed to come up a bit short last time

On current form I wouldn't entertain picking him, motivational personality or not. Why pick someone who will probably lose on the off chance he'll motivate someone else to win - (that's a half)? In effect, you're almost certainly giving away a singles point and probably a fourball/foursomes point.

Turn around in form, brilliant, but not at present. And if we're talking about past glories/performances, let's pick Colin Montgomerie... if you're past it/not on form, no place in the team.

Maybe the Americans would love to see Poulter in there on his current form...

Pick players based on historical past performances? It's worked for the England football team every tournament I can think of so why not do the same for golf as well?

I can see a big changing of the guard for the next RC and the worst thing that could happen is that we stick with the old guard based on sentiment.

I understand that the qualification period is now up, but for the future, If Poulter remains outside the top 50, how many co-sanctioned events can he play? Would he qualify for the WGC's? I know he won the Accenture and HSBC in the past, so maybe he gets in those through that. Can he rely on getting into the majors? Has he qualified for any in 2016 for example, through last years's finishing position? Probably doubtful.
Just shows how quickly you can fall off the radar and how valuable a top 50 spot is.

No past winners get into WGCs, I think. I remember the commentators kept going on about Tiger's world ranking at WGC Bridgestone a few months back and how its all about World Ranking. Poults is now ranked 51, so a good week this week and he'll most likely be back into the top 50.

I think Christie O Conner Jnr could be in with a shout as well, remember that shot at the Belfry a couple of years ago, turned the match that did.

And by the way Darth Monty likes this post, all credit to you ;) https://twitter.com/Darth_Monty

So Mr Poulter has sneaked into the European top 50 by a couple of points but not the worlds top 50.
Still a bit of work to be done yet though ?

Oh Boo Hoo. Poults flies around in private jets and on the rare occasion he flies with the ordinary people it is First Class. He has a stable of Ferraris and could retire tomorrow and he and his family would live well.

In fairness it wasn't Poulter complaining

I don't think I have seen him complain too much about his lifestyle

If it's more about where they play than where they were born - we run the same risk as the England Rugby World cup team. Just about every player from Toulon represented their country - apart from Stefan Armitage and look where that policy took us! Play the best players available at the time of qualification...........
