Had a one day meeting at the Belfry so took my clubs along and after an early finish teed off just after 4pm. As a high handicapper the only one of the three courses I was allowed on was The Derby. Sadly I found it very disappointing, no better than many municipal pay-and-play courses. Lots of un-repaired pitch marks and divots and wide fairways with limited hazards and penalties for wayward shots.

Maybe I was expecting too much from the 'third course' and I'm sure the championship courses will be as different again. Perhaps I just need to get my handicap down so I can play on the grown-ups courses.

To be fair I should add that the greens were in excellent condition, especially given the recent monsoons. They were also much faster than I expected...to my cost:o.

I've played the Derby a couple of times, nothing special, but I wasn't expecting it to be. The greens wre maybe the best part of the course, although to be fair it was in decenct nic when I last went.

We played there last year, IMO the PGA is a harder test of golf given how much the wind comes into play, but the conditions of the tees were piss poor. The brab was in great condition but I found the course was designed with looks in mind and not so much a technically challenging layout.

Wouldn't rush back.

Derby is not that great. Actually enjoyed the PGA when I played it, few week holes dotted about, but always in great condition and a nice deal with a 2 fore 1.
