Par 3s Bottom of Flagstick Visibility

That describes it very nicely sir - and of course you know the hole - so given that, do you think the observation made about seeing the bottom of the pin by reducing the greenside rim is a fair one - sounds like you might not disagree?

I agree Hugh.

Don't have a problem not seeing the bottom of the flag on a par three, but in this case the hole would visually look so much better. We have a couple of par 3's where you can not always see all the flag, but this is because the greens are raised.

I've not read all the replies so don't know if it's already been mentioned but this is quite simply a design trick used by architects to make the game more interesting and challenging.

Except it doesn't. Hole would look much challenging if you could see how small the green is, and also how the side bunkers are tight to the green. If you have a narrow green, it is nice to see that off the tee to put the fear of god into you.

Designers do that as well. You can't have every feature incorporated into every hole :ears:

That's right - I've been a member long enough now to know when a newer members shot - that he thinks is on the green - the left side especially - isn't. It really is narrow. 14yd pretty consistently. I think you are right - it could well be really intimidating if you could see the narrowness between the flanking bunkers

Distance is not the key issue as far as these guys are concerned.

Besides - who needs a laser range finder on your own course? I can judge the distance to the flag on this hole to within a couple of yards (as we have coloured flags) and I can't hit the ball that accurately.

Best answer is red, yellow and white flags designating front middle and back positions then everybody has some idea..

Our club does precisely that, except the flags are red, white and blue to match our competition tees. As long as you can see at least some of the flagstick, a laser rangefinder will give you the exact distance.

They are not saying that. The 14yds is the width of the green, there are 12yds dead ground between cross-bunker and front of green. For them the bunker causes 'sighting' issues for seeing the ball finish.

As the green is narrow you have to be very careful if you go for the flag as if it is near an edge it is not easy to determine that and you can think you are on the green when you are not. But that is a separate thing from what they were on about....

Seem to remember Hirsel (lovely course) having a par three that plays uphill with the green being over the crest and then down hill so you couldn't see the green at all. The anticipation of who was closest was great as we walked up the fairway...

Out for a few holes myself this evening. Could see flag on this hole was red and I estimated 155yds. Hit two 7is both dead length on green - one 6ft right - other 12ft right. Holed the 6 footer. Judging distance without a gizmo and not seeing bottom of flag is easy. And of course I could not where balls had ended up until I got close to green. Was quite a wee thrill to see them both dead length and one just 6ft away
