LIV Golf

There is always going to be situations that are not the best look for a tour.
Westwood and Poulter staying and Jones and Na above them going although perfectly within the rules is not the best look.

63 year old Vijay Singh is teeing it up on the PGAT due to being in the all time top 50 money earners.
Or policy board members continually getting sponsors invites for tournaments they have not qualified for is also not great.

Kind of feel for Kevin Na as he seemed to have plenty of energy for LIV - unlike Koepka. However his golf just isn't good enough and as a non equity captain a 44th place finish left him vulnerable.
Quite liked him but always felt he was shoehorned into becoming a reluctant captain with the early Phil fall out. Didn't really seem to have done too much with it & never seemed that comfortable. Clearly we don't know what happened behind the scenes but perhaps he wasn't happy with the re-brand & direction. Maybe some tales will come out in time.

Its just a shame Jay Monahan didnt take the call from Yassir that resulted in Liv setting up direct competition.

Im sure if he could turn the clock back that would be the one thing he wishes he had a mulligan on.
Liv wouldn't exist.
Billions would have been invested into the PGA Tour
All the best players would be in the same place.
He would still be commissioner.

Just for context he didnt refuse the call because of the source of the money..

I highly recommend reading LIV AND LET DIE by Alan Shipnuck to learn about how this whole mess came to pass from the Premier Golf League to PGAT PIF approach to setting up Liv Golf.
So agree.

All LIV or the PIF really wanted was a 5-10% ownership of the PGA.

Any different to a 62 year old retired bloke invoking an earnings rule to take a spot on tour instead of someone who’s actually qualified. 🤔

Like your response shows the PGA has stupid categories as well.

VJ has done a lot for golf over his 40 years playing and he is only following the rules.

There are so many other places guys that he so called stealing a spot from can go and play.

There is more to golf than the PGA.

That is such a contradictory statement. Young guy pays thousands to earn a spot through Q school or Korn Ferry but doesn’t matter he can just go else where so a retired player can take his spot!

You then say there’s more to life than the PGA! Well surely if that’s the case VJ should be told the same thing he has had his turn get on with enjoying those things out there that have more to life than the PGA and let the younger guy that’s forked out hard earned cash and sweat to qualify take his chance.

Saw an interesting post on X earlier which raised a good point.

The PGAT have now shown their hand as to what value they place on returning players - Brooks was obviously happy to head back under those T's and C's, but he's clearly getting nothing like the hundreds of millions that some people are talking about over Brysons contract renewal for example.

Maybe that's why he didn't look all that stoked in the press conference the other day, cos if he wants a bag of money to play golf, it ain't coming from the PGAT, and LIV now know what they are up against when determining how many dollars to put in the bag.....

Brooks is probably the least interesting of the big guns that could potentially have made this move, his value is the fact is he's a 5 time Major champion; his value to the PGAT is the same as his value when he moved to LIV - getting one over the other with a Major winner. But, he was never really invested in PGAT events, never really invested in LIV (as a captain or GM) and I'd imagine will be even less invested in the PGAT going forward as his access to equity and other bonuses is limited for 5 years. In terms of golf, Brooks himself remains the biggest obstacle to him getting back to his best.

LIV may not have been happy with the Brooks situation and as someone says it bloodied LIVs nose, but the PGAT have also managed to bloody themselves too; members are disgruntled, the open return offer to the others has been rebuked, rules for membership it seems can be freely changed when the mood takes so expect more rule changes in the next 12-18 months.

It was mentioned on a podcast that the reason for Brooks poor form was the lack of competition; however, this didn't translate to Brooks winning every time he teed it up. There's an excellent golfer in Brooks Koepka, but he has a lot of mental and motivational struggles - neither LIV or PGAT will fix that.

I don't think BDC stays with LIV beyond his contract, but I also don't see him accepting the same terms as Brooks; BDCs reach and influence is within the top 3 players in the world. Smith might re-sign with LIV. The Rahm one is interesting - no idea what he will do, or if the DPWT case outcome / Ryder Cup implications will impact this, but the precedent is set by the PGAT for rule changes if in the interest of the powers that be, so it is likely Rahm and Hatton will be playing in the Ryder Cup regardless.

Is this something that he would actually do ?

I guess there are no rules saying a player must be on a tour to play in any of the majors

In the world of free agency yes of course he could do it.

He is the one golfer I wouldn't put it past.

Problem would arise in 2030 when his major exemption would run out if he didn't win another.

I really don't think BDC is in any hurry to go back to the PGAT if he left Liv.

The world of Pro Golf has changed since Liv Golf formed.

It could also be a leverage threat in his contract negociation.

Is Bryson now the biggest name in golf?
Believe he has the most followers on social media.I know we might not use that as a yard stick, but in the modern world it’s massive.
The Yanks absolutely love his type of character, just look at the Ryder cup.

Let’s be honest most golfers are pretty dull.
Rory & Scottie for example, neither of them have much personality.

Seems like a smart negotiating play - can apply leverage against both LIV and PGAT no matter what’s on the table from the other.

The one potential miss for him might be … if you’ve not got much track record outside majors then you’re only a couple of dodgy majors away from being very difficult to select for the Ryder Cup?

Would be interesting move to play very little tournament golf

And surely there must be only so many houses you can chip over

Is there a chance of things going stale doing social media golf
