LIV Golf

It would appear Mr Jay Monahan has not been telling the truth again when he said a deal was getting very close after meeting with Trump at The White House.

Golf Digest and No Laying Up Podcast reporting that the White House meetings went horribly and a deal is as far away as it has ever been.

Quote
"As two high-level sources with direct knowledge of the negotiations disclosed to Golf Digest, the tour delegation arrived in Washington D.C. last month confident, convinced that Trump's tacit endorsement had tilted the balance of power in their favor. However, the White House meeting’s aftermath left Al-Rumayyan bewildered and incensed, reportedly characterizing the tour's proposals as not merely inadequate but disrespectful."

Let’s be honest - someone within the meeting will be making unrealistic demands and someone will be eyeing up the Saudi wealth into the US

You could be right , its complex.

But come out and say how it is "Were hopeful of reuniting the game, everyone is working towards that goal but we still have some resolutions to find which is going to take more time"

How this guy is still in a job after all the lies and general handling of this saga is surprising to put it mildly.

The PGAT want there cake and be able to eat it it would seem, take the Saudi money but get rid of LIV as an alternative to conventional tour golf. That is never going to happen.

And did Jay really think Trump was going to back the tour, against a country he is doing business with to the tune of $100's of billions?

He will always be looking to find the best deal for his tour against the backdrop of someone with deep pockets

PGAT isn’t going to have a deal where they lose players to play on another tour when they want

Suspect the PGAT won’t be wanting any major events in the US

Assuming you meant PGAT may want no LIV events on US soil, I could imagine that being true & understandable.

Can't see it happening but I wondered if in future they might alter the schedule and allow a couple of golfers participating on LIV access to The Players, as they already have precedent of the odd non PGAT golfer playing.
Just idle speculation though.

Sorry yes no LIV events in the US

I think that’s ultimately where LIVs problem is - hosting events on the doorstep of the main US Tour

And imo it was done that way because of Greg Norman’s grudge

Imagine it this way

Someone else decided they wanted to create a world tour

They host an event in

European , Asia , Middle East , Aus , Far East , South America

They open it up to all golfers and you qualify via your world ranking

It’s also hosted on the weeks where there isn’t a “signature” event or Rolex event or a major

That would give top level golf in other countries outside the US whilst also allowing the other tours to have their main events

So you would essentially have an extension of the old WGCs

That imo is something that would have fitted in with all the tours and the schedule

Regarding the coverage (via App/Web) - was mildly irritated by the 'upcoming on Fox' stuff.
Would like to think the tech is there to only have those bits for the Fox viewers, but not holding out much hope. Pesky 'mericans always have to ruin things! 😂
There were a couple of shot replays 'for Fox viewers' also.

Would be amusing to dig out a 2022 broadcast, reckon has probably shifted ~ 60% to 'regular' coverage now.

I dont think so. They just want their cake, and know they are offering PIF a far better cake than LIV.
I love LIV and it would have been great if it had succeeded. But the PIF is in the business of profit, and going with the LIV proposition has just lost them a fortune. Like all wars, the challenger always starts out with the belief both that they will be victorious, and achieve it quickly. But it rarely works out that way, and the practicalities of retreat and admitting defeat are messy. The business reality is that PIF wants to be on the winning side. Accepting LIV will be the burnt out husk of a tank at the side of the road is the process they are going through at the moment.

I recently read an article suggesting that Yassir's recent visits to the White House and his direct access to the President are arguably worth far more than the money invested in LIV so far.

To put the financial side into perspective:

  • The PIF has reportedly spent $5 billion on LIV Golf so far.
  • That’s just 0.6% of their total fund—basically pocket change (as crazy as that sounds).
  • The PIF grows by 5.7% annually, which translates to about $38 billion a year or roughly $104 million a day.
So, to fund the reported $5 billion investment in LIV over the past three years, it would take the PIF just 48 days to generate that amount of money.

Compare that to the $3 billion that Strategic Sports Group has invested in the PGA Tour. Unlike the PIF, those investors need to see a return on their investment.
The PIF, however, would generate that same amount in just 28 days.

This is why if the PGA Tour tries to compete with LIV financially rather than working toward a deal, it could be a dangerous strategy.

Yassir has the financial firepower to back LIV indefinitely if he chooses to. It’s not just about profit and loss—if LIV were purely a commercial golf venture, it probably would have been abandoned already.

For example, the PIF could easily decide to double down and invest another $10 billion into LIV, making massive offers to top players that would be hard to refuse.
And to raise that 10 billion? It would take the PIF just 96 days.

These numbers really highlight why LIV has a level of financial resilience that the PGA Tour simply can’t match.

It is a shame when it comes down to money though - that’s all it is at the end of the day money

That’s why the players jumped

PGAT may not be able to keep up financially with LIV but it’s got the heritage and the history and the events that players want to win

I remember the reaction when the clubs looked to jump ship into the European Super League for the financial benefits - the reaction was telling

Professional golf as a whole has gone backwards , it’s losing viewers each week , making it more about the money will have more turning off

PIF etc have already ruined boxing as a sport , golf is on the same path

Golf was on a downward spiral well before LIV got involved imo, in your world it would be a closed shop with zero competition. That such a blinkered view to take imo 😉

How would it be a closed shop with no competition 🤷‍♂️

My interpretation of what you’re saying, correct me if I’m wrong, is any takeover or start up tour to compete against the PGAT is a bad thing. I’m paraphrasing but that’s what I’m getting from your posts.
Or is it just any excuse to bang on and on again about PIF being the devil? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I've got the Singapore Liv event on record. Looking forward to seeing what it's like. Only ever seen a small bit on YouTube. Being on itv is great news , with so little golf on free to air these days

Any start up of a tour isn’t wrong - you can start up any tour and then attract teams and players using any method you want

But there will always be opposition to it if it’s on the door step of another tour and has the potential to affect negatively that other tour or tours

As i said just look at the reaction to the ESL start up

Most of the coverage so far has been on ITVx, but with the time difference, it’s not ideal since the events have been airing in the early hours. ITV4 has only shown about 1–2 hours of the opening coverage.

It’ll be interesting to see how ITV handles the coverage once we get to the European and US events, where the timing will be more viewer-friendly.

In particular, I’m curious to see how big they go for the LIV UK event—especially with names like Rahm, DeChambeau, Koepka, Smith, Garcia, and Niemann all playing on UK soil.

I haven’t seen any coverage on ITV yet, do they have different presenters or is it still the original fella from YT and the app?
