LIV Golf

I haven’t read it all but my take on it based on reactions of Phil & Mel is LIV got some points but not as many as they wanted.
If I’m wrong can someone steer me in the right direction please
That’s about the crux of it

They have got points equivalent of a DP event but only the top 10 get points so the winner will get more points on the Liv event compared to the DP event

They posted some rational about in regards still some areas where the tour still doesn’t fulfill eligibility criteria

Laughable.

Like I said, golf needs a regulatory body.

The people running the game are working to agendas to please their mates, and quite clearly making up rules as they go aling.
To an extent, The R&A and USGA should already be doing that job. Unfortunately, both have shown a tendancy to be heavily influenced by lobbying from certain self-interested parties.

Isn't it about time Phil and Mel did a podcast on LIV/PGA Tour golf??🤣

It’s the sort of thing Sky Sports would promote, Neville and Carragher-esque..

Being generous maybe OWGR were aiming to keep some leverage for encouraging future changes.
Hard not to seem like certain parties were keen to avoid it looking like a 'success' though.

I think points down to say 25 (44% of field) may have felt more appropriate and defendable.
As AW mentioned, feels a bit of a fudge as is.

Be interesting to see how the media sites view it over next few days.

Is anyone really surprised ???

OWGR is designed to help the PGA tour at the expense of ALL other tours.
OWGR only really matters because it’s one of the primary pathways into tournaments. I don’t really care about the DP World Tour, PGA Tour, LIV, or any other tour. What moves the needle are the majors. OWGR is run by the majors (Augusta National, PGA of America, USGA, R&A) the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour.

If I’m representing the majors, my priority is simple. Have the best players in the world play in my event. In my view, the OWGR fails at that goal because the PGA Tour has been able to exert an outsized influence on how rankings are calculated and rewarded.

The PGA Tour is at the top, and it’s understandable that it would act to protect its position. It has also worked aggressively to suppress competitors, and I'd say their marketing and PR campaign has been effective.

I’m not sure how far down they go to award points - but I can see why they want to restrict it to 10 when they look at the way players have entered the league and also left

If the pathway was a bit more than just the 5 , if they didn’t replace players based on nationality etc then it might have been more

Also depth of the tour isn’t the same as others so I suspect 10 is a starting point and then see how LIV react

They made a few steps forward but also prob a step back as well

Who would be responsible for appointing such a body??

Well lets not forget, June 6th 2023 - it was agreed in principle to create an organisation that would oversee mens professional golf - with parties from all sides involved in overseeing it's operation.

This should be the bones of what is required but include those that operate the ladies game as well - a committee that take people from all the tours and implements a structure in which they can all operate without prejudice or favour.
