How much would you BET on your skills/ability?

I play with a couple of blokes sometimes who like to play for a lot of money and I hate it.

In my experience, playing for £150 or whatever gives the game too much of a competitive edge and some of the geniality and camaraderie of the round is lost. I won't play for anything more than a fiver for this reason.

There is a good story from Augusta on playing for money. The maximum members can play for is 25 cents a hole and there was a famous occasion when two wall street big shots played there with two members and whined the whole way round because they could not find their A game as the stakes were too low and that they were used to playing for a lot of cash.

Apparently, one of the Augusta members got fed up of hearing this and in the clubhouse afterwards said, "Boy, you guys really do like gambling don't you? What is the most you have ever played for?" $5000 a hole skins came back the reply. The Augusta member said I have a bet for you if you would like to take me on? The trader eagerly accepted and asked what the bet was.

The member asked, "how much are you worth?" Reply - "with my beach house, condo, ski lodge, place in Manhattan, boat and car collection, I would say upwards of $25 million...."

The Augusta member picked up a coin from the table and said, "I'll toss you for it."

I have heard this several times and really hope it is true! :)

I once played for a fiver a hole against a mate, I played like a dog and was £25 down on the last tee, a par5. He offered me quits if I made par, double if I bogeyed or he payed me £25 if I birdied. I hit a great tee shot, layed up into position, wedged it to 10 feet and dyked it, probably my best moment in golf.

Nice... who won the toss? :)

It must have been fun seeing him back out of it....

£1 front back and over all is my limit. we are out playing golf not cards.

in fact I feel like a prune taking the doh at times. the win is enough. the money should be symbolic of that !

You're playing a game and the opponent offers to play for £50, £100 or £200, do you trust your ability and take the bet? would you trust your game and play for even more money? (assuming there are no bandits involved), what's your 'price'?

... and does the format of the game matter to you? (eg, would you bet on yourself for certain formats and if so how much?)

I don't gamble at all - Hate the "It means more if you've got something on it" mentality - no it doesn't.

Happy to take on pretty much anyone at matchplay (the best format for golf) and confident of winning though.

Fantastic. Love that story... I'll be retelling that for years:D

I don't play for money aside from the couple of quid in the greedy. Nothing to do with not trusting my game, more to do with not being able to afford to lose that amount of money. Losing fifty quid would hurt more than winning fifty quid would help and with golf being unpredictable, it's not a risk I'm prepared to take.

If I was going to play for that amount of money, I'd want to play off scratch, that's the only fair way.

I like to play for something but can't afford to lose too much!
I have a friend I play with and we are very competitive. Usually play for a £5 or a £10. He likes to play off scratch. I agree it's the fairest way. We always go double or quits down the last!

Sounds very much like the Kerry Packer story with a Texan in Vegas

Myself and my regular PP play for a cup of tea in the club... It's a bit of a joke really as neither of us have the time to pop into the club usually.. Last time we played I told him to forget the cups of tea and just bring me a box of Yorkshire teabags...

I'm not a big fan in playing for money, but if it ws going to be for a decent amount it would have to be with both players off scratch.

If its big stakes neither party should get anything for free.

Played last week against a friend/colleague - I was 8-4 up in our series prior to the game. After 2 holes of match play we were a/s and he started bleating saying he was gonna 'take me down' (in a nice, banter way).

I suggested we have a little wager and he came up with £20 if he wins, £10 if i win (given the series score). I accepted. Was 3 down with 7 to play. I par'd 4 of those holes to win them and he'd actually birdied one of them as well. Finished 18 a/s and he suggested we play the 1st as a play-off - we did, I won it with another par and he was devastated, not for the money, purely as he screwed up.

Took his tenner on the car park and got a phone call the next day off him....

...."I'm gonna take you down, i'm gonna take you down next time - your ass is mine"...

It'll keep me focussed the next time i play him for sure :)

I have heard a similar tale, but it involves Kerry Packer offering the toss to some loudmouth American in Las Vegas.

I am happy to put a tenner in the pot for a roll up game, but if I am playing a friend much prefer to have the loser buy the drinks. Taking a few quid off a mate, or giving to him, hardly seems to matter compared with the joy of winning or the misery of defeat.

Depends on who I'm playing with really. I dont have a set limit as such, would just depend on my mood and what the bet was.

Our Sunday crew quite often play £5 £5 £5 (front, back, overall) and I join in on that when I can. There are usually 6 -12 people involved, so there can be a nice pot to win. You have to win outright though, any shared scores and you dont pay.

Normally it's £1 £1 £1 plus 20p bits

At times it is £2 £2 £2

Have played £1 skins and £1 bits

Seen some offers of £50 etc

Dont like betting on golf , we will normally play €2 €2 €1 , for a bit of fun in the society , so the most you can lose is a €5 .. if someone wins the €5 they normally buy you a drink anyhow so its just bragging rights really

Did once play for €200 tho , got sick of a guy berating another guy who wasnt interested , the more the guy said no , the louder the other guy placing the bet got, so i called his bluff and said id play him for it , guy couldn't back out , i sad ok strokeplay & an independent person as a referee just in case..

won €200 but i wouldnt take it , i was just proving a point , he bought me lunch instead , i have no doubt he would have taken it if he won ..
didnt enjoy the round or the golf one bit tho ..

50cent skins is massive craic tho

No wonder off 21!!! guessing you'd want full difference too?

I'll play for whatever I'm comfortable with in the situation, whether it be a fiver or even the 50p that another 'non-gambler' and I play for!

Have been in larger money-ed swindles, purely to use the additional focus to make Medals/Comps feel 'normal' - and made money. Always had a Tenner with one of the bigger gamblers (Golf was merely a board) on our Comp results.

Won £200 a while back without betting! Silly bet by my partner that worked out, so even sillier for the oppo!
