I play with a couple of blokes sometimes who like to play for a lot of money and I hate it.
In my experience, playing for £150 or whatever gives the game too much of a competitive edge and some of the geniality and camaraderie of the round is lost. I won't play for anything more than a fiver for this reason.
There is a good story from Augusta on playing for money. The maximum members can play for is 25 cents a hole and there was a famous occasion when two wall street big shots played there with two members and whined the whole way round because they could not find their A game as the stakes were too low and that they were used to playing for a lot of cash.
Apparently, one of the Augusta members got fed up of hearing this and in the clubhouse afterwards said, "Boy, you guys really do like gambling don't you? What is the most you have ever played for?" $5000 a hole skins came back the reply. The Augusta member said I have a bet for you if you would like to take me on? The trader eagerly accepted and asked what the bet was.
The member asked, "how much are you worth?" Reply - "with my beach house, condo, ski lodge, place in Manhattan, boat and car collection, I would say upwards of $25 million...."
The Augusta member picked up a coin from the table and said, "I'll toss you for it."
I have heard this several times and really hope it is true!
