• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

How much would you BET on your skills/ability?

i'm a big fan of £3 (Front) £3 (Back) £4 (overall) + 25p or 50p bits. I find it makes me concentrate a lot more during a social round (which i sometimes have issues being bothered about). never going to lose more than £15 and you only need to win one side to break even

played a high stakes round against an estern european millionaire round Stoke park house, was well up and putting for a bird on 18 when the guy drops down a gold bar and said ....... oh hang on that was goldfinger

I never bet more than I can afford to lose which, at the moment, is not that much. Do not think that I have ever played for more than a £10.00 plus bits and that was an extreme. In my current group it is a pound front, pound back and pound overall. At my old club it was always better ball matchplay for a fiver plus bits. To be honest if I won a fiver I would leave it in the bag as I would no doubt be handing it to someone else the next week.

I do like a wager, it keeps me interested and, as others have said, I can lose interest or concentration if I am just knocking a ball around for the hell of it.

Don't really bet on golf, as a rule, but I wouldn't be averse to doing so if someone wanted to put up a modest amount.

Not sure I'd go past £20 for 18 holes, though - any more would probably take a lot of enjoyment out of it. Unless I could be certain of winning ;)

I like a wager when I play, I find it tends to focus me more.

Normally play 2,2,2 plus 50p bits and birdies.

Went on a golf holiday a few years ago to Portugal, 24 of us in total, and had a 5 euro bet each day with everyone, based on best stable ford card. Won the tour and almost paid for my whole trip. Certainly focusses the mind when you start a round badly and know you're looking at a 100+ euro bill at the end of it…..

Always play first 10 nearest hole on putting green for a fiver if with one mate, another mate we play for food after.
Did play for 300euro in Portugal after making a drunken 4am bet before a 9am tee off but won so was all good in the end.

I don't gamble at all - Hate the "It means more if you've got something on it" mentality - no it doesn't.

Happy to take on pretty much anyone at matchplay (the best format for golf) and confident of winning though.

Each to their own but the best format(s) in my opinion are 1. Foursomes (scratch) or 2. Medal play (scratch).

I have heard a similar tale, but it involves Kerry Packer offering the toss to some loudmouth American in Las Vegas.

I have heard that too. He also said the same thing on a plane once.

I have an even better Kerry Packer story that I know to be 100% true but don't have the time to type it right now. Will do later. Very good it is.

Don't like playing for money as it detracts from a social round. I think I've never played for cash?

I've heard that Kerry Packer story too with the Texan in Vegas, but not in Augusta. :)

I haven't gambled since I put a couple of quid on the Grand National from one of my first wage packets. Never got over the fact I lost it and got nothing for it - seriously!

The Sunday "swindle" is a £1 which you'll get back if 2nd and perhaps gain a £1 if you win. I see it as a competition entry fee though rather than I'm playing for money. In fact coming 2nd is best of all as you get your money back and don't have to organise tees and format for the next week.

We generally do £1, £1, £1 and 25p bits. Sadly these days the cost of the first round isn't covered by the winnings. I would play for a bit more but it's not the money that spurs us on it's the handing it over that is embarrassing as most of the clubhouse get to know!

Spot on - it's always a giggle in the clubhouse passing around the silver coins

If I was playing a Senior then I would accept the bet every time, easy money all day long

I beg your pardon? Aged 67, I fancy my chances against anyone off handicap. I don't work, go to the range every day I'm not playing and I'm not far from you. Want to put your money where your mouth is? You'd give me odds I should imagine, you're so confident.

Surely paying an entrance fee to a comp is betting on your skill?

We normally just play for a pint or bacon barm depending on the time of day!!!!!

Sorry a barm is a 'roll, cob, bread cake, bun' or whatever you heathens call it!
