How good are the different elements of your game?

I think 99% of people struggle with this though..

i break my game down into 5 categories

woods/fairways
long irons
short irons
chipping
putting

i can always be assured only 3/3.5 out of 5 will ever turn up for the same game, its the one that missing that is the difference between me getting lower or lingering around 12/13

That's it in a nutshell. When it all turns up I shoot a gross 75 and win the competition I work on all the same elements as you but I don't have any one weekness that is so much worse than the rest of my game

I returned to golf last year after a few years away. Started with handicap 16 and got down to 10 by the end of the year.

I'd say those 6 strokes have almost all been made up by improving short game and putting.

I hit a reasonable long drive, but can be wayward. Fairway woods are strong. Can't hit a long iron to save my life.

Having lessons to improve my iron striking - and consequently rebuilding my very shonky swing. It's a work in progress and I seem to be battling the shanks at the moment. Hopefully will get it together for the season starting.

Rather than rate myself I'd like to throw it over to Homer and Sundance to rate me as I'd be interested to see what they come up with - feel free to be harsh fellas :D

They told me you couldn't hit a barn door at 10 paces... (retreats rapidly)

:D

Love it!
If the barn door was waaaay right then yes I missed it as I was too busy pummelling the middle! haha. Having a quick warm up with 6 irons was the best decision I made that day. BTW Sean/Shaun from TM really is a decent bloke, he didnt sigh, laugh, cry or run during our three sessions.

Correct there Brendy ,Sean is a good guy who knows his stuff, even gave Aztecs a few tips when we where there.

The GM office is no place for the faint-hearted when it comes to analysis of one another's games - things can get pretty brutal at times.

But no sooner had I sat down this morning than I was met with this swift appraisal of my game from Tappers and Paul O'H. "Your chipping and putting are probably 3 or 4-handicap standard, your driving is probably about that as well, but your iron-play and pitching we'd put at around 14."

Out of interest how did the analysis of Tappers and Paul's game shake down

My driving has improved alot in the last 12 months whilst my woods and long irons are pretty consitent. My problems start with the approach into the green (probably high 20's handicap standard). I'm good around the greens (i'd say late teens but then i do get alot of practice) and then there's my putting which is the most frustrating part of my game.
Having said all that, the biggest and most significant improvement I have made this year is my course management. I have started to think my way around the course rather than hack...much more fun!

Which course do you play Worlebury or Weston?

Driving - 10 but getting better all the time
Fairways - 5
Irons - 3
Chipping - 6
Putting - 5

The driving is soo much better than this time last year and everything else has sharpened up a bit too.
All in all a very happy camper.

I'm as average as you can get. I'd safely say that im 13 handicap at every aspect of the game.

I just need to settle on a repeatable swing , stop tinkering and practise my shortgame.

Driving - 12 h'cap
Fairways - 10 h'cap
Irons - 6 h'cap
Wedges - scratch
Pitching & Chipping - 6 h'cap
Putting - scratch

I am decent at just "gettting the job done". No rhyme or reason to it that i can see

It's hard to say Jezz, i'm so inconsistant and that's why i'm still off of 24. The last time I played I started par, par, par, quad, so read into that what you will.

Just like me sadly. One minute I am smashing huge drives down the middle, wedging it close, hitting top drawer iron shots putting well the next absolutely awful. So many people at the club have commented that they have never seen anyone simultaneously so good and bad at golf. One day...

PS SB loving the new Avatar...the Battle of Mboto Gorge...razor sharp mango...wibble

Bobmac, I play Worlebury more than Weston but also play Tall Pines quite often. I used to play Weston alot a couple of years back but just don't get the chance to play as much as i would like.

I also get to play in Birmingahm a couple of times a year as i have family up there and there a group of us (all as bad as the other thankfully) who make the most of a good opportunity to get out when we can.

Excluding yesterday ;) I'd probably say:
Driving: 14 - best bit of my game
Fairways: 16 - usually pretty good
Irons: 26 - my worst bit !
Chipping and pitching : 19
Wedges:20
Putting: 15 - inconsistent but usually tip top
